IF...

* If you have fat accumulation around your abdomen, especially if your waist thickness is more than 102 cm in men and 88 cm in women ...

* If your triglyceride is higher than 150 and your good cholesterol HDL is lower than 50 ...

* If your blood pressure tends to increase ...

* If you are experiencing sweet crises and eating attacks ...

* If you feel tired and exhausted during the day (especially after lunch and dinner), if you experience sleepiness after dinner ...

* Bread, pizza, rice and pasta are your favorite dishes ...

* If you want to get out of your night sleep and have something sweet or starchy (pies, rice, fruit, desserts) ...

* You can stay hungry for a long time, but if you eat your food very fast and swallow it without chewing, if you sweep whatever is in front of you like a truck with a bursted brake ...

* If you complain about night sweats and tiredness in the morning ...

Be careful. You may also have insulin resistance.

Luckily, the only one on this list that applies, or once applied, to me is item 6.

My bloods are good (at last) my BP is good (at last), i can't say i am fat/overweight/thickening waist, being just above the BMI lower guideline for my height/weight.

But i love to eat, including rice, pasta, bread and the occasional pizza.

Your OP is a good pointer of what to watch out for... Cheers.

There has been, for a long time, a common misunderstanding about nutrition. People have been substituting sugar for fat, and this has probably caused a lot of the health problems around the world. I have eaten enough sugar to fill a small yacht, but after having learned to change my ways I now eat very little. Too much of any substance is not good, and unfortunately most foods in the stores have too much sugar.

True. Hidden sugar is especially noticeable in the USA - to an outsider at least. When I lived in Houston TX I was surprised and rather appalled to find they put sugar in potato crisps (yuk) ad even in sliced bread (yuk)². American jam is inedibly sweet to European taste buds, and even Californian wine seems slightly sweet - though that is at least natural sugar, not fully fermented into alcohol. And guess where the fattest people in the world are - and the highest incidence of Type 2 diabetes.

Dodging processed food and fizzy drinks is clearly crucial. I reckon if you do that and you bother to cook your own food instead of buying it in pre-prepared, you won't go far wrong. We ate very well in the US. But I did the shopping and the cooking.

I've been cooking for myself for about 2 years, and that is the only thing that lets me get off of the sugar. Its rare to find prepared food that does not contain fructose. It is the most affordable and most common ingredient. At least its not sugar of lead, but that isn't saying much.

The bit about fructose is interesting. I have read that high fructose corn syrup is a widely used ingredient in processed food and that, for hereditary metabolic reasons (our evolutionary ancestors ate fruit), this goes straight to fat! Another incidence of industrial food chemists (and the US corn-growing lobby?) accidentally creating a problem and then resisting the solutions.

Yep... or too much plain white flour/carbs which turn into glucose faster than **** goes through a goose. Even so-called "whole wheat" products are at least half white flour. Every try making bread with all whole wheat flour? Ah marrone! It's like working with setting concrete.

Yeah, the voice of experience here...

* If you have fat accumulation around your abdomen, especially if your waist thickness is more than 102 cm in men and 88 cm in women

Yes, I call it my "bear belly" (I consider myself a little bear). Oddly, I'm kind of proud of it. I'm in that group of gay men that finds bellies sexy, health issues notwithstanding.

* If your triglyceride is higher than 150 and your good cholesterol HDL is lower than 50 ...

No matter what kind of shape I've ever been in, even as a runner and cyclist at a good weight, my lipids were always wacked out it's a family trait.

* If your blood pressure tends to increase ...

Yeah, sort of

Pretty much all of those. But at the risk of sounding the alarm, night sweats can be indicative of some forms of cancer. I know about that... I have polycythemia vera, a cancer in which the bone marrow produces too many red blood cells. I've had terrible night sweats, which seem to be coming under control as the pv is becoming controlled.

Be careful. You may also have insulin resistance.

I do, and "impaired glucose tolerance". I had an oral glucose tolerance test (not fun) which showed it. It's easily treated with diet and exercise. Breaking the bad habits and establishing new good habits is what can be difficult.

My dad insisted his was "dropped chest"

Have you spoken to your GP about statins? Could help prevent heart attack or stroke. My dad again. He had a stroke for unknown reasons, cholesterol within limits. The specialist put him on statins "just in case"

Yeah, we were going to try them a while back but I balked because I heard about the side effects. He just tells me to watch my diet. Which he is right about. When I followed a keto diet my blood lipids were beautiful. I'm a carbaholic; all of my docs (internist, gastroenterologist, former endocrinologist) blame carbs for wacked out lipids. My gastro asked why don't I go back to a keto diet if it worked for me? I have considered it, except for my attempts to go vegetarian. But it seems I don't have the genetics for that. And having to break the carb addiction cycle. When I do keto I lose weight, I'm energetic, my blood profile improves. I did two hour mountain bike rides on keto.

That's what he says every time i say "Hi pudgy" ;-)

I can't speak for anyone else other than dad, he gets no side effects after they sorted the dose out. At first he was getting knee pain but not now.

If diet does it for you then great, do what must be done even if you miss potatoes and ice cream ;-)

You are a brave person, but don't neglect your health, help your body, I'm sure your red blood cells will return to normal.

I’m afraid the only thing to keep PV in check is the chemo and occasional phlebotomy. PV is a genetic condition.
