But it's followed by this:
Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.

Since the first Christians were a still developing community, they were urged not only to take interest in themselves but also care for others, their community and their religion. Without it Christianity wouldn't expand. No community can thrive if its members are disloyal to each other.

However, humility doesn't mean being a doormat. Serving other people's interests at your own expense and to your own detriment means being duped. Humility doesn't preclude self-respect.
