... which vary greatly in intent behind them, from "we welcome this baby into our community" to a ritual to "officially" give the baby a name, to parents pledging to raise the baby in that religion, to a magic ritual to hopefully make the baby less deserving of eternal torture.

Which is why some churches, like the Catholic and Lutheran churches, use both infant [and adult] "baptism" followed years later with "confirmation", the latter of which is a confirmation of one baptism.

Yes, and once more, confirmation does not have the same feel as baptism.
