'In a video that went viral on social media platforms on Thursday, around 100 men and women, many without masks, were seen participating in a procession in the village.

While women were carrying water pots on their heads, several men were leading the procession while beating drums...

...A section of people from the village believed coronavirus could be eradicated by pouring water on a local temple of their deity'

I suppose that's one way to win a Darwin award.

Although in a population the size of India 100 village idiots seems a relatively small number.

Give them some credit. At least bleach didn't feature anywhere in their ideas, and they didn't propose shoving lights up their arses. :D

Stories like this aren't limited to "pagan" religions or countries that are "less developed".

Coronavirus: German police raid church service with over 100 maskless worshippers | DW | 03.01.2021
Yes, we have a church defying orders in my city as well. The pastor is currently on trial. There is a daily protest downtown, people marching maskless. They're anti-vaccine, anti-mask. Generally some of the signs have spelling errors. Our government doesn't have the jam to arrest them. Hence Alberta has the highest per capita rate in all 50 states and 10 Canadian provinces. Higher per capita than India. I'm ashamed to live here.

Thank you for sharing Daniel, those helmets/water pots they have on in that photo are very interesting. Reminds me of knights from the Templar age.

It's a historical legacy many groups vie for, and in that regard SMOTJ's celebration is off to an inauspicious start: Most scholars date the foundation of those first Templars to 1119, or 1120, making the order today just 898, or 899 years old. ~ Source: Meet the Americans Following in the Footsteps of the Knights Templar | History | Smithsonian Magazine.

Twilight Hue

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
Maybe not enough are dying yet in that neck of the woods to prompt people to practice precautions until herd immunity occurs.

People dont generally react until they see the fire in their backyard.

Actually, they were reacting. They were reacting in a premodern, prescientific way, invoking the will of the deities to combat something they do not understanding. Germs and viruses are a modern concept. Evil spirits are a premodern concept. So they were definitely responding by invoking the gods favor to combat the disease. They know it's killing people.

It's really no different than what you see in Christian churches who deny evolution, who themselves also believe that God will protect them without the need for masks or vaccines. Modern concepts and ways of understanding the nature of reality, are not part of their understanding of reality. It doesn't fit that system of belief.

Regarding herd immunity, you realize that is not going to occur unless enough numbers of the population get vaccinated first? In America, we will never reach herd immunity because of our own premodern, prescience populations, who are for all intents and purposes no different than these villagers in India, except maybe they are still in the beginning denialist phases. Except in this case I doubt they even had a chance to educate themselves fully on these matters.
