A while ago changes were made to our DIR policy. Questions by people outside of the group indicated by the DIR are no longer permitted.

    [From Rule 10]
". . . 2) All DIR (Discuss Individual Religions) forums are (exclusively) for the use of members who identify with those groups or practices.

. . .Members who do not identify with a DIR group may not post in that DIR section; we recommend creating a thread in the Religions Q&A instead where there is more freedom to comment."

I do have a question. Is the DIR participation depend on what people put in their religious label?

I can't remember when I joined a DIR, but don't participate in one now so don't remember how the requirements are enforced.

We're working on that even as we speak.

Until now people weren't required to list their religious affiliation in their profile in order to join a DIR. That may change.

I signed up for 4 DIRS because I felt that "New" "other" "other revealed" and "Syncretic" all applied to my situation. I found that three is the limit but I don't think that's documented.

I also thought that having a giant DIR for all abrahamic and so forth and tiny DIRs microsplitting new/other/... made my life difficult. Although all that is only theoretical since traffic in those DIRs is minimal to none.

It's in the text of the rule (10):

"A member may select up to a maximum of three (3) DIRs with which they identify. A member may change their selection of DIRs at any time, but the total number of DIRs selected must never exceed three (3)"

If you see it as a problem, you should start a thread in Site Feedback about it.

I must have run into this the last time. I use the menu item Rules & Guidelines | Religious Forums as my reference to the rules.

What if that person does not like being labeled with a religious identity, regardless of claiming that religion itself for themselves? My religion is "Love, Light, and Life". My native religion is Christianity. But I will not put that on my religion, for a long list of reasons, even though I identify with it. Labels pollute, as well as stink in general. I won't wear a label like that, certainly not if I was told I needed to in order to post in a Christian thread. That should be a personal choice, and leave it at that.

What of "more freedom to comment" is what we're wanting to get away from to not have our thread overrun with people who just want to hear their own voice and make it clear they don't care they weren't asked?

Tell you what: if that's the policy we decide to go with, we'll make a separate announcement and we can talk about it then.

Until then I'm not going to answer objections to a policy that doesn't exist yet, in a thread about something else.

It's usually counterproductive to turn an announcement thread into a discussion thread anyway, let alone letting one turn into an off-topic debate.

In the meantime, If you want you can go ahead and register your objections in site feedback.

    What do you suggest?

Edit: I mean you already have the option of putting "[fill in the blank] Only" in the title of any thread you post in religious q&a.

I'm not sure how we usually moderate those though, I'll have to check.

Maybe you can see if there is a staff group consensus of telling the staff your religious affiliation (maybe in site feedback) to get permission without having to put it in your religious label. That's a good question to ask there.

    That's definitely a belief/value system. :)

Maybe have moderators screen questions before they are posted?

That is done through the personal details link in the menu that drops down when you hover the mouse pointer over your name in the upper-right corner. Then you'll see a list for DIR access, and you choose the two or three you want access to. No one sees these.

I don't think the staff will go through each person's profile, though. I posted in a DIR because I had that affiliation, but since its not in my profile, I was warned. I honestly don't know if they can do it, though. I mean, we have people that change their religion here all the time, so how would staff handle that?
