I'm so sick of the over-veneration of police officers.

Considering getting back into the fold: coming home to Jesus in an Affirmed Church this time. Somewhere between an agnostic and an atheist. Questioning my faith and religion.
Juries often let cops on trial get away with murder because they were indoctrinated to think cops are infallible like the Pope.

Some think only cops should have guns but not regular citizens. Where does it say in the Second Amendment that being armed is the "exclusive privilege of police"?

I'm sick of it when cops' cheap plastic badges are worn as some crown of honor.

Some think that anybody who kills a cop on duty should automatically get the death penalty. Are the lives of cops who volunteer for their jobs more sacred than even the lives of innocent babies who sometimes are murdered?

When people venerate cops above ordinary citizens, the whole idea of American liberty and constitutionality is put in grave danger. This dangerous attitude leads to tyranny.

The reason is that an attack on the police is seen as an attack on society, so yes it is a bigger crime. In the same way if someone killed a fireman when he was on duty or an EMS person trying to save someone's life.

    Why the grudge? You jelly?

I think it's propaganda to make citizenry scared of the police by lionizing them on television reality shows and the like.

Have you noticed how they always get their man or women and common people are being portrayed as total idiots and buffoons while the police are sensible and strong each and every time?

Nobody can ever get away from them.

    They will control you completely.

    Obey or go to jail.

Those are my impressions. But in fairness most police officers out there are actually decent people with a very tough job.

I'm a big advocate of community policing and really wish that would come back.

In the old days, there used to be a cop walking on the beat who everybody knew and would go to in case there's any trouble.

Now it's faceless shadow figures in a police cruiser which has about a billion lights on it, massive cage bars, dark tinted glass, and a spotlight that would illuminate Pluto from here.

I've had family and friends in the force, but that notwithstanding....

    1) It's a ****ty job and very dangerous.

    2) Society often has similar sentiments as you do making the job extremely difficult.

    3) Law enforcement families give up way more than their fair share of time at their own loss.

That being said you can really never pay them or thank them enough. Be glad they're there so you don't have to walk around town strapped like a cowboy in a spaghetti western.

The police are working a difficult job -- they're not there to appease you and they're not even there to "enforce tyranny" or whatever you think. They follow their commanding officers orders, do what they gotta do, and get their check. And, maybe if they're lucky they don't collect any spare holes at the end of the day.

In my experience, cops tend to suck. They typically murder with their trigger happy fingers with impunity, the do abuse their their power up to and including sexual coercion (which does include illegal road side cavity searches), they search just to search, they often police for profit, I know of one who tased an elderly man who was a resident at a nursing home, more than a few who are racist, tried and pleaded with a judge for a man to get put on trial again for the same crime he was already found not guilty of, Indianapolis bears the shame of Officer Bisard (drunk pig on duty who killed another motorist, and the IMPD tried very hard to cover it up), and one pig in Peru, Indiana threatened to shoot a few people--including the mayor--for not getting a day off that he didn't formally request off or follow proper procedure for doing so. And in California I am so glad to hear people complain about crap police and their corrupt behaviors instead of putting up signs in their lawn that read "say thanks to a cop today. (Indiana thing)" Oh, and cops are so pathetic that in itty-bitty Winimac (IN) the sheriff has an armored van that is suitable for a warzone because he believes America is one, and Johnson county has them lined up along the free way. White or black, but especially black, they murder us if we don't follow their exact orders, even if we are unarmed, not presenting as a threat, and have headphones on. They are heavily militarized, and pose such a grave danger to us that "swatting" has become a thing.

So yesterday it was a rant about anti-gun protesters. Today it's a rant about people who carry guns as part of their job

I thought there was gun ownership control for people with mental health issues in the USA

I tend to agree. Some cops are okay, some not, but the bottom line is they're government employees - no different than anyone else. They shouldn't be venerated any more than teachers or employees of the Motor Vehicle Division. Sure, we can give praise and awards to individual cops for those rare acts of heroism, but that's no reason to give carte blanche to all cops. They should not be given any "special rights" above that of the average citizen, since that would imply that cops are above the law, which is indicative of a police state.

I can honestly say that there has never been a time in my life where I personally "needed" the cops. The only times I've called them was when it was required by law or by my employer at the time. Of course, they provide a necessary public service, but then, so do street sweepers.

It would be nice if their law enforcement had any real effects on society as a whole, but as it appears, all they ever do is go after the criminally mischievous and the small fry. Society is still plagued with gangs, organized crime, and corruption at the highest levels. We don't see the cops do much about criminals at the top (because that would be too risky and difficult). All they ever do is go after the easy meat and others who can't fight back.

Ah, the good old days when police officers were not the popular targets purposely set up for the kill.

Sometimes cops even kill fellow cops when they are bad and justifiably so. And yes, it's a necessary evil sometimes. If a cop were to unlawfully break down a citizen's door and enter without proper cause or a warrant, the citizen so violated has the right to shoot him in many jurisdictions.

I was on a jury in 1985 in northern California. It was a DUI case. There was the arresting cop at the trial testifying against the defendant. The judge informed us that police can make mistakes in their judgement even with good intentions. The cop was claiming that the man was using swear words at the arrest scene. In our minds as jurors, this had no bearing upon guilt or innocence. We acquitted the man. I, a juror, looked at the facts and the hard evidence. In my mind, I removed the policeman's badge and uniform in the court of law.

    What total, utter pap.

Get your butt on a ride along with a cop, before you shoot your mouth off.

Don't you realize that the police represents the law, the law which preserves liberty and constitutionality?

These young men and women of today are trying to preserve lives and property in an environment much, much more hostile than when I began my 25 year law enforcement career in 1969.

Most police officers are pro gun rights.

    Our badges are not plastic.

I would love to have you with me in a tactical situation, and watch you cower.

Your post displays ignorance, meanness of spirit, and hostility. Did you cross a legal line and get corrected by a police officer? Your observations are right out of punk 101.

    I am sickened.

Are you willing to pay the taxes required to bring back community policing of the type you speak of? If you and your fellow citizens were, the police would be all for it.

Every piece of equipment on a patrol car serves a purpose. All the lights? to make idiot citizens aware of the car when it is responding to an emergency.

Today, your fellow citizens make sport of sniping officers in their cars, if you can't see them, you can't shoot them. Decades ago I had the bulbs removed from new patrol cars that would come on when the door was opened.

    The spotlight is obvious.

The cages keep some drug crazed scroat from choking you out while you drive. Ever tried to corral someone high on PCP? You wouldn't like it.

In the old days was just a simple gumball as I'm sure you're already aware.

If cops need that many lights on their cars then it's a good indicator that society overall is getting a real bad case of idiocy if they can't even see one light on a cruiser to avoid banging into it.

I'm not saying you're wrong with making your points but damn what happened to the days where all you metaphorically needed was 'Andy Griffith and Barney'?

I remember when kids used to run up to cops and had a bit of a chat. Making sure they're doing all right and the cop giving some reminders to stay out of trouble. I remember the local cop in my neighborhood always drove by when I was a kid just to have a chat. Kids don't forget that when they grow up and become better adults on a long run I think.

Those days are gone. It's now since been relegated to 'Max beyond thunderdome'. Urban style. 'Us and them'.

That doesn't include tasing elderly nursing home residents. It doesn't include searching people for having brown skin (and finding nothing because there was nothing to find). It doesn't include pulling over a black woman and telling her "get out of the car ******." It doesn't include harassing a 20 year old male for having the same last name as his dad.

I hope next time someone is breaking into your house or threatening to kill you, that you will call a drug addict or rapist instead of those nasty cops.

You forgot handcuffing little kids. I lost a lot of respect for the police collectively when that moronic procedure started.
