Let’s say religion never existed. Let’s start with a clean slate and take one idea. Homosexuality. In your best educated guess what percentage of the people do you think would say that being gay was wrong? I’m guessing the numbers would be in the majority. Where would we put the blame if not religion? I guess we’d have to put it on the individual.

If there weren't cultural norms on marriage, relationship, and male and female roles, probably most wouldn't think so. Americans, as independent nature, probably wouldn't in this scenario.

Oh another blame game thread

luckily the research has already been done by Dr Kinsey

Seems about 12% are exclusively heterosexual. Anyone in the other 88% who says they are saying being gay is wrong is being hypocritical

One problem with Kinsey's work. He used behavior as a way to classify folk not based on how the identify or based on who they are attracted to. So some folk he labelled may just have been experimenting...

Yet many later and indipendent research efforts produce similar results

@Power Stone

I recently informed you of abusing the funny frube. I should also inform you it is a rule violation. Please reconsider your flippancy when you don't agree with a post

I’m guessing the numbers would be in the majority.

So, religion is a reflection of what's culturally acceptable, as well. Ancient norse culture was hyper masculine, and anyone who was a male and portrayed feminine qualities was seen as dishonorable. On the other hand, some Native American tribes had respected social status for LGBT folks of the past. Two-spirit - Wikipedia

What is culturally acceptable changes over time. That's just the way it is.

Where religion plays a part is when it dogmatizes what is acceptable and what is not. It sets in stone what was culturally acceptable at the time it was created. That's when we start running into problems, and those problems are much harder to change when people's religious ideologies are tied to those harmful ideas...

I think homosexuality is not a choice.
I think LGBTs would have been free from persecution.
And straight people would have never criticized them.

For those who believe in nature and evolution and accept that humans have been around for 100,000 years...

People always show disdain to people who are different. This predates beliefs in gods and religions. However, religion codified and amplified the differences. Also, for some reason most religions have a distinctly anti-sexuality bias. No pre-marital sex; No masturbation, Removal of the Clitoris, etc.

On the other hand, the Christian Priestly class did love to look at paintings of little naked cherubs.

Basically, gay sex is like trying to eat through your ear, because ear is also hole in the head. I believe most people would understand what is the correct purpose of body parts and would consider such things wrong/stupid. I would say 70 % people would think it is not right.
