It took me a long time to find the opportunity, but I finally managed to visit Versailles a few days ago.
The palace is as impressive as we see in the movies, and the gardens something absolutely incredible. It takes the entire day to do a decent visit.
I can see why the people who were starving around that time ended up losing it and chopped the king's head off. However, the thing that impressed be the most was the lack of privacy the king had. The man was never alone. There were people in his room when he went to sleep, during the entire night, when he woke up - he was even watched when he used the toilet (or the equivalent in those days) and most of his meals he was alone at a table, eating by himself while others watched. How weird was that? We have our fair share of crazy today, but seriously???

If Louis XIV was around today, my guess is he'd live in a gold tower in New York.

They already do live in gold towers and they gleefully rub the commoners faces in it.

It was like a golden cage, I think.
Versailles has become the symbol of absolutism. All royal palaces built in the 17th century tried to emulate this ch√Ęteau
