Church of Christ
I want to break down that phrase.
Often times there is the popular meaning and the literal meaning, like "go break a leg".
The popular meaning of "I trust in Jesus for my salvation" means "As soon as I place my trust that Jesus is from God and he was sent to die for me, I am saved."
The literal meaning of "I trust in Jesus for my salvation" is "Jesus calls the shots. Whatever he says about getting saved, I will believe."
An example of this is
Mark 10:17, 21 As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. “Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” [21] Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
But the wealthy man did not trust Jesus for his salvation. He didn't trust, being the key word.
An example of those who did trust in Jesus for their salvation
John 6:67-69 “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve. [68] Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. [69] We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.”
They stayed and believed his words, and followed them.
They didn't just say, "Jesus is here to save me, yeah I believe that."
It was his words/his teachings, not just his presence that had life.
That being said,
Acts 16:31-32 They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved---you and your household.” [32] Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house.
Did the jailor have anyone to believe in until Paul and Silas spoke the word of the Lord to him?
Romans 10:14 How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?
A person must at least know Jesus a little bit and trust in whatever Jesus says about salvation in order for the statement " I trust in Jesus for my salvation" to be true.
When people say "I trust in Jesus alone for my salvation", I ask, "What about Jesus do you trust?"
So far, no one has answered that question. I believe it's because that phrase has been drilled into them and it has no meaning.
A person who has a mature understanding of Jesus, what Jesus is about, and what he taught, can genuinely trust whatever He says about getting saved, no one else.
Luke 14:27-30 And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. [28] “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? [29] For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, [30] saying, ‘This person began to build and wasn’t able to finish.’
The floor is open, thank you.
