I think the problem was that the divine name was TOO important. By limiting its pronouncement to the High Priest on Yom Kippur, the stage was set for forgetting it once the temple was no more.
If I had never met any Jewish people before I would not believe that, but it seems possible that is the case. It is to me in the realm of possibility. Its still hard to believe, but I won't further detain you over it.
