I dislike Baroque churches...

I now know that I dislike the interior of Baroque style churches:

Last week I visited a city in Europe which has lots and lots of churches

I love going round churches and was looking forward to seeing some of them

But they were all in the Baroque style

They were really disappointing :(

They were awful to behold

Truly awful...

They were overwhelming, but overwhelming in a bad way

Basically, they offended my senses

There was zero beauty to be found

And all the gold that was everywhere reminded me of Matthew 19:24

And they had niches which housed really, really creepy statues

It was all very much in poor taste

It was over-the-top kitsch

Made me really appreciate the beauty of the churches I attend, these are aesthetically superior to all the churches I saw on my holiday and none of these are in an otherwise beautiful city

Does anyone here actually like the interiors of Baroque churches? If so, why? Or does everyone think they're horrible?

I would say they are beautiful if you look at them from an earthly point of view, but spiritually they may be too much toward richness and wealth then actually showing modesty.

Not that I'm aware of

But it does for me, having seen it at its worst
I see...I was raised in a tiny town filled with Baroque churches...
An exaggerated number in proportion to the small number of inhabitants.

There are some splendid ones in Germany, like a wedding cake. This sort of thing:

But I agree that unless well done - and above all with plenty of light, to stop them seeming oppressive - they can seem gross.

One of the problems a lot of us have in appreciating them is that they are so unlike the gothic style that many of us are used to.

I love the baroque style, both the architecture and the music. As for the Gothic, I find it grotesque and barbarous. If only the Great Fire of London, which gave us St Paul's, had spread far enough to demolish Westminster Abbey.

But, as has often been said, if we all liked the same thing, there'd be a terrible shortage of haggis…
