Another quick thought for now; I think a good way to tell you are a successful magician is when the magic of others can be easily recognized and, if the magic is against you, being able to resist it without the other magician even realizing they've been called out.

It depends entirely on how you define a magician. However, as a generalisation I'd simply say that when your magic does what you want it to, you're a successful magician. I don't feel any need to enter into "magical contests" with anyone around me. That's just a waste of good time that could be used used learning something actually useful.

How about demonstrating you have a good handle on yourself as the measure of success?

You get people to agree on a new tax for people over $450,000 that will likely lead to a decline in revenues from that same sector... and everyone feels good that they did something...

I agree with others a good measure of success is to measure yourself and how far you have come. IMO comparing yourself to others can often lead to setting the bar too low.

I'm sorry, I thought being able to avoid being manipulated would be a measure of self.

    I'm tired of this place.

If you're a magician, what need do you have to be manipulated?

For what it's worth, I agreed with your statement. Sounds like a lot of people here just want to be contrary, despite stating identical tests.

If you have to test yourself, what kind of magician are you?

An intermediate. To not test yourself you're either a master or an idiot with a swelled ego. In either case, why not be tested?

Um, because to "test" yourself is to measure yourself against a standard.

    i.e. RHP

Well, here's the thing. How do you define a magician? Is a magician synonymous to one on the Left-Hand Path? If not, what's the difference? Perhaps one of the great differences is the self. A common magician may not notice him or her being manipulated. A practitioner of LHP should notice it soon enough. Thoughts?

No less a standard. And no better.

We're drinking and we're dancing but there's nothing really happening
And the place is dead as heaven on a Saturday night
    ...
The whole damn place goes crazy twice
And it's once for the Devil and it's once for Christ
But the boss don't like these dizzy heights
We're busted in the blinding lights

Someone who causes change to occur in conformity with Will, beyond the simple every day acts that people engage in (typing this post, for example, hardly counts). This also should, naturally, allow you to notice when others are doing this as well, and especially when the change they Will to occur is in contradiction with yours.

However the magician would have to have a good knowledge of magic directed at others. I might be wrong, but my impression is that it's not something magicians generally like doing (being sometimes defined as "black magic"). I also think that you don't always have to recognize it as magic, or even notice someone's trying to affect you. I think people in many cases just brush the other aside and goes with their own will. Another question is when this is entirely wise and when it isn't.
