We were given a collection of old books awhile back by a friend who had inherited them from another friend. He didn't read, but knew they were valuable, and knew we enjoyed books. He dumped the whole lot here, and we sifted through what we wanted, what we didn't want, and what we thought might be valuable and wouldn't want to put in a 'take a book, leave a book' box.

We finally got around to investigating(a couple years later), and some of these books fetch prices from several hundred to several thousand dollars online. Being as these are books we'd probably never read ourselves and could use the cash, we'd like to sell them. Question is, how does one go about doing this? Half Price Books doesn't give you beans, and I don't really know what the best way to do this is.

Many people like first editions and only look for those. Other than that I cant help. Best of luck.

I've never done it. But if they are moderately valuable, I've heard eBay is a decent way/place to sell things.

These things are super old. We found an autographed book from 1890. They're all from that era.

    Good thinking.

    One's worth $2,000 online...

I don't know about over the Atlantic but on this side there are some companies that buy used cd/dvd/books. You download their app, scan the items barcode or ISBN number and it gives a price there and them.

That's perhaps for common, low value items, for higher value books i suggest contacting a specialist book dealer.

Yeah, you definitely need to find a dealer, I think. A specialist antiquarian bookseller.

A dealer's a good idea, but I'm not sure at all how to do that, or what I'd search for to find one...

You could take them to an auction house and get them appraised etc. and sell them there.

An auction house! I hadn't even thought about that... we do have one not far off.

Thanks for the help, everyone! Hopefully we can get these into the hands of someone who will enjoy them.

I've bought from them, but hadn't realized you could sell to them until this thread. :)

I've had good luck on Amazon for non-antiquarian books.
