Do you think you experience everything in life as you encounter it, or do you think there are things your subconscious mind blocks you from experiencing?

Maybe you have a strong understanding of what reality is, but do you think there is a likelihood that you are wrong about some things?

If you had to quantify it (assuming such a thing could be done), what would your best guess be for the amount of times your subjective thoughts inaccurately portray objective reality throughout your day?

Do our beliefs influence the way we perceive reality? If so, do you think you hold beliefs that inaccurately represent reality?

Just a thought. :D

If that were the case, how would I know?

Considering our physiological limitations, most certainly.

If it is an objective reality, than I must assume it is within the scope of a subjective perception to perceive.

Do our beliefs influence the way we perceive reality?
Yes.

If so, do you think you hold beliefs that inaccurately represent reality?
No.

If your life was a constant barrage of turds, I can see how that might taint your perspective.

Our perception of reality is good enough that we can survive (most of the time). We can navigate through traffic without getting hit, we don't eat food that's rotten and we can avoid drowning in our bathtubs (most of the time).

We are easily deceived when things get more complicated. When we don't focus and use critical thinking we can be defrauded, lied to and manipulated.

I am most confident in things
  • I have investigated myself
  • I have consistent answers on repeat experiments
  • my perception is in line with that of a majority of experts
  • I don't have a bias or am aware of it.

Having switched from hardcore atheist to fundamentalist Christian and then back to atheist but with a better understanding of religion, I can say for sure that the way I interpret information, which influences my perception of reality, has changed dramatically. Christianity made me a huge conspiracy theorist as I saw everything that was against my belief, whether entertainment or scientific discovery, as a deception by Satan. So the world was in a war between God and Satan. This made me subconsciously reject scientific discoveries as not reflective of reality purely because they did not align with the Bible and it didn't matter whether the facts proved them to be the case or not. So back then my subjective thoughts constantly inaccurately portrayed my reality.

The key difference between accurately determining reality vs inaccurately determining reality is method. Are we basing our knowledge off the ever increasing amount of facts and knowledge that our world provides, or do we have perceived ideas that we have to conform reality to. So are we letting reality inform us of itself or are we imposing what we think reality should be on reality?

- No, my subconscious does not block anything.
- I think I am basically correct, but fine tuning is OK.
- What is portrayed by mind is a total illusion - all the time (do we see the atoms?). But that is the reality at our level of existence (neither micro, nor macro).
- Yes, my belief clarifies the reality and the illusion.

Since all reality is subjective I"m 100 percent sure my reality is mine. Whether you believe in your reality is of no concern to me

Selflessly here for you
Dear @SigurdReginson and fellow readers,

I think we are all limited in our ability to know Reality by many things (examples below) and therefore, I prefer to speak of experience and perspective.

Our perception of what is, is at the very least limited to and by:
  1. Our physical senses (usually 5) - The perspective of our species
  2. Our conditioning/socialisation - The perspective of our time and place
  3. What we are taught and our understanding of it - The perspective of our speciality/field
  4. What we encounter and our accumulated personal experiences - The perspective of our person
  5. Our expectations (based on all of the above).
I think there is a ”true” reality out there; I just don’t think we are able to experience it from the perspective we are limited to.

Sound-waves were there before life evolved into being able to hear them ;).

Yes i think you experience it, however, the mind can play tricks, distort or even hide away some experience.

Maybe you have a strong understanding of what reality is, but do you think there is a likelihood that you are wrong about some things?

Me wrong? I don't think so. I may not have all the evidence in which case i cannot be definitive.

If you had to quantify it (assuming such a thing could be done), what would your best guess be for the amount of times your subjective thoughts inaccurately portray objective reality throughout your day?

Best guess, none.

Yes people's understanding of reality can be tempered by their beliefs but the reality doesnt change, just the thought

I wish I could give a good answer to this, but I'm tired / or on a pared-down autopilot.. up for a day at this point, sort of the result of doing 3rd shift, and wanting to not sleep on a day off.. I imagine I'll go to sleep shortly, and wake up at three a.m.

Anyway, there's something in me that says I should say, or think, the phrase 'I don't know,' less if possible. For I should know at least something about anything, even if it's just a tiny little bit. If I say 'I don't know,' then I fail completely to interact with whatever aspect of life that I encountered. But if I say that I at least have an idea about something, though it be the vaguest one, this seems somehow infinitely more commendable than saying 'I don't know.' But I realize that it won't be objective, because my lens is a primate meat suit. I expect it would be thousand times more different if I was looking through the eyes of a chameleon, or octopus. What I can understand, and what feels right, generally serves the body I inhabit, unless something is aberrant.

The former.

I'm not sure what you are asking.

I'm quite confident in my understanding of my experiences.

If you had to quantify it (assuming such a thing could be done), what would your best guess be for the amount of times your subjective thoughts inaccurately portray objective reality throughout your day?

That completely depends on who I am throughout my day.

Do our beliefs influence the way we perceive reality? If so, do you think you hold beliefs that inaccurately represent reality?

Do you really expect me to comment intelligently on how others perceive reality?? I can't. Can you?
