How similar is India's BJP to Britain's Conservative Party?

Make your own comparision. BJP surely is a Hindu-interest nationalist party, but open to Muslims and Christians if they too are nationalists. Nation stands first for BJP.

This goes for me too. Still, I know enough to prefer Modi over Congress. I let a room to a Gujarati chap. He's happy.

Oh yes, what I know says that Modi is “da man”.

They're more right-wing than the Conservative Party, I would think. They promote a sectariatian form of Hinduism and are pretty conservative, with some of their base basically being what you could call Hindu fascists.

I don't know much about Indian politics but I am a true centrist; if the British Conservatives are right wing then the Democrats are true centre because the Republicans are far right wing and the Conservative party has policies similar to both Democrat and Republican. Labour/Lib Dems are looney left.

I vote Conservative in the UK and most of the time in USA I support the Democrats (which are allegedly closer to the UK Conservative party in policies) but I always thought India would benefit from left-wing policies more because of the widespread poverty and corruption. So why did the BJP win? If you wanted left wing alternative to Congress then why not Aam Aadami party?

Yes, they have fascist elements too. But they are practical people. They know fascism will not work in India. It did not work for a previous BJP government of Atal Bihari Vajpayi. So, Indian democracy forces them to be accommodative. Next year, Mr. Modi will be faced with the same problem. They are trying to eradicate these trouble-mongers from the associated organizations (Vishwa Hindu Parishad - Praveen Togadia and Vinay Katiyar).

What you think is your privilege. India is not interested in a left-wing government. We have had enough of sham-socialism during the Congress years. Communists rule in one small state (Tripura) and one a reasonably large state (Kerala). In all 2.8% of the Indian population. Tripura has voted a few days ago and it is possible that they may chose a BJP government. The result will be declared on March 4. Removing communists from Kerala will take more time. BJP provides India a honest caring government. I do not think other parties will be able to remove BJP so easily.

Dark and light Orange is BJP and allies, Blue is Congress, Red Tripura surrounded by Bangladesh and Kerala on left/Southern-most sea coast. Other reds are regional parties.

China benefitted from a mix of capitalism and communism; the healthcare and education provided by the government is an example. This would help India too. Kerala is an example.

Socialism/Marxism helps when there is widespread poverty and illiteracy. Then you use capitalism once everyone can stand on their own two feet. That's why I vote Conservative in UK as we're already a developed nation

Personal views are not arguments. Russia, China and East European countries benefited by abandoning communism. So, which argument is better?

Umm AAP is just a four-five year old party and quite a regional one as of now, centered in Delhi and Punjab. Congress and the BJP are the only two really big national parties. If you see the last 4 terms, two are by Congress and two by BJP. So that pretty even, I think.

China is still communist; healthcare and education are provided by the state and businesses are partially owned and subsidised by the government.

Kerala has low poverty and high literacy thanks to communism

India too and government healthcare and education. Most exit polls predict a BJP government in Tripura. So, we would be left with only one communist state, i.e., Kerala. BJP has gained even in Kerala. However, the test will come only in March/April 2021.
So that pretty even, I think.
Even!? Congress has been decimated. If Karnataka goes the BJP way, then we could announce the death of Congress. They will not win even in the Christian majority states, Meghalaya and Nagaland.

Congress is now known as 'vote-katua party' (one to which a vote is meaningful only as far as it affects the prospects of other candidates and not a win for the Congress candidate). May get a few seats but does not change the overall picture.
