How Much of Politics is Faked These Days?

Here's a clip from the Rachel Maddow Show in which Maddow points out that a considerable amount of American politics these days is based on falsehoods and hoaxes. Falsehoods and hoaxes such as that the new American health care bill will have death panels. Her comments on the matter got me wondering how much politics is simply faked these days. Not just American politics, but politics everywhere. So, please name some politics that are based on falsehoods and/or hoaxes.

Lebanese politics is just... all over the place. Lies are probably scattered liberally.
