How is pornography affecting society?

Perhaps I'm too young to really understand how things have been working in the past, but just to give an example of something that seems prominent to me, it seems pornography in the not-so-distant past would give men unrealistic expectations of what women should or would be willing to do. Now-a-days though, it seems like a greater number of women also look at porn, so now they DO do stuff that I would have only expected to ever come across in pornography. I suspect then that in reaction to the over-expectation of women to do things is now met with a susceptibility of women to actually to more things.

Like I said, perhaps I am too long to know the long term trends, but am I only one noticing this?

And what other affects is pornography having on the population that has or has not been quite well articulated yet? Is it making profound changes that we have never witnessed before?

Good questions.

My girlfriends and I could always tell when a guy had learned his "technique" from porn, and we used to laugh about it. I would find it tragic if today's young women are learning their "technique" from porn as well, because the majority of it is rather singularly focused on male pleasure, and what "works" for a man usually is nothing like what "works" for a woman.

My feeling is that porn makes both men and women really bad at sex, much like watching Lethal Weapon might make us really bad at fighting and catching criminals, or watching Judge Judy might make us really bad lawyers.

I think it can desensitise people, making stimulation more difficult (ie/ it takes more to turn you on and keep you turned on) and resulting in bad sex.

Well, giving fundamentalists something to publicly froth over in rage while simultaneously giving them something to watch sinfully in secret aside.....

Having worked in the biz [camera and lighting, you pervs], over the years I can see how adult videos can have instilled incorrect expectations, and some bad techniques. Keeping a sex scene going as the main content of a film is not easy. There is also a certain expectation from an audience which must be upheld, that doesn't carry over into actual practice. So there can be an odd mirror effect where you are showing things that are not conducive to good sex to an audience which expects you to show super energetic and impossible/awkward things for very long periods of time.

However let's fast forward to today. We now have the video technology so that anyone can produce whatever type of adult sexual action they can manage. A LOT of the production companies not only now cater to female tastes but are run by women. There are also an explosion [pun intended] of common people showing what they do on an amateur scale right at home. So there is also an empowerment aspect for a positive side.

While it is true about bad sex being a possible outcome for people [especially men alas] trying to imitate what stars do, this is balanced by the positive of giving otherwise unimaginative men something to strive for. There are some guys out there ladies who'd have NO clue whatsoever to do with you if they hadn't stumbled onto some porn. - and let's be frank, same goes for some women.

I see it as a demonized industry that has its faults and boons just like anything else. It's hot-button, because it's sex.

Why, porn means many guys don't have to complicate their lives with girlfriends at convenient times in their lives.

pornography addiction is a disease that actually leads to changes in brain function and behaviors similar to that of drug addicts. anyone who gets involved in pornography are playing a very dangerous game and it should not be viewed as harmless

Pornography addiction - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
On August 15, 2011 the American Society of Addiction Medicine issued a public statement defining all addiction (including sexual behavior addiction) in terms of brain changes. "Addiction is a primary, chronic disease of brain reward, motivation, memory and related circuitry."[3]...Since ASAM released its statement, and shortly before its release, additional new studies have come out on Internet addiction (which include Internet pornography use). They reveal the same fundamental brain changes seen in other addicts of drugs

considering pornography is freely available on mobile devices and home computers used by young kids, we will soon see an epidemic of epic proportions and the results will be devastating.

Sexual addiction leads to porn watching, not vice versa, it's saying.

And no, anyone with addictive personality is playing dangerous games. Porn does not lead to it.

religion is an addiction indicator, too.

Speaking personally, porn give unrealistic expectations of what girls are into. That said, the younger girls in my office freely admit they allow porn-based sexual escapades to occur because that's what guys their age are beginning to accept as the norm.

I'm familiar with the familiarity of certain techniques.. I've seen them employed by women as well. I don't know.. there is, at least for me, something much sexier about a woman's exploration when it isn't done in such a... well, obviously reproduced manner. When the aspects of said things don't seem so... like.. subconsciously reinforced by seeing porn, it's much.. nicer to encounter I think. I don't know though.. the whole aspect is really hard to even put in terms... things are very subtle...

My feeling is that porn makes both men and women really bad at sex, much like watching Lethal Weapon might make us really bad at fighting and catching criminals, or watching Judge Judy might make us really bad lawyers.

Haha.. very appropriate metaphor.. but if I think I might try my hand at adding in a little more... a disillusioned fighter or beginning judge might attempt said techniques from these movie/shows, but after a handful of encounters in the real world actually fighting/prosecuting (or what have you), what does pornography mean at that point? Do you think that it would constantly be a plagued on that person's ability to do whatever it is they are doing?

Thanks for the insight. I always imagined how difficult it would be to actually make a porn that suited my own tastes, especially considering how bored I would get from seeing it more than a few times.

It seems everything could be tied down to taste, I suppose. I mean, not all porn is inherently male-centric or centric at all (though I don't know how often that is being digested). I think to an open mind who isn't entirely consumed by the ideas pornography brings can really place it in context, as if it represented reality.

It seems to me after a bit, especially after having a number of sexual encounters, porn isn't really too enthralling, if not mind-numbingly ineffective, after some acquaintance with it. Becomes more like a tool after awhile. Though I don't know how everybody treats it, so...

Not if you watch amateur porn or the kind of porn that isn't made by those kinds of companies that put out unrealistic things.

Yeah, I mean, the old adage is 'familiarity breeds contempt,' so anything can become boring. Sometimes though, as I hinted it's possible that watching something newly freaky may inspire. Everything has already been done, in all seriousness, but, not by everybody. :D Yin and Yang.

I've looked for things and haven't found them. Rule 34 is a lie!

Have found some pretty bats**t stuff though... Like animated dragons having sex with cars. I **** you not.
