How does one fight an alien invasion?

Um, I usually don't interfere outside of my own threads, but I am a "V" and can say two things.
One, the key moment of the last "V" series was when they said that we "have" to fight alien invaders because they are just so powerful that we just can't trust them. That is completely logical.
Two, when advanced civilizations fight, love is actually more powerful than hate. How stupid would advanced aliens be to hate? They don't destroy, they dominate with love. It makes them feel good.
Thank you.

But what if they never devlop the concept of war. Maybe on their planet there are only two species and they evolved peacefully. But now due to overpopulation because of their peaceful ways, they've flown to earth looking for more land.
If they are peaceful they are in for a rude surprise when they get here.:(

Just a thought - if aliens didn't immediately wipe us off the face of the earth, it is at least possible that we can beat them. Why wouldn't they wipe us out if they could? And if they can't, then surely there's a possibility that we can mount a resistance.

I thought war of the worlds was a virus like the common cold?

Sort of. They were not immune to the bacteria in our water.

EDIT: That's Spielberg's 2005 movie, not the original novel.

Fair enough, but the op specifically mentions "invasion". Invasion implies hostility. An alien race able to travel through deep space will not come from within our own solar system. So, there will be a high level of technological sophistication involved. Much more advanced than ours, we haven't even sent a person to the moon in decades!

Yes I think we'd have to assume the technological advantage was on their side, but difficult to say what that means exactly, high tech gadgets for sure, but firepower? There might be inherent limits to what they can schlepp that far. And we probably have tons of hidden nukes nobody knows about- they might get a nasty shock!

It is difficult to speculate what kinds of weapons aliens may bring to the table. They may possess the ability to slingshot asteroids, which would mean they wouldn't even need to bring their own weapons. I am assuming that militarism and violence will be common to most evolved species, of course I may be very wrong.

I hear people talk about zombie apocalypses even though I think an alien apocalypse is much more likely and plausible. How do you survive against it and what could you do to go against it. Unlike zombies of course, aliens would naturally be much more difficult to defeat given their advanced technology, but but like zombies or anything else, they can be defeated, as nothing is invinclble. So what would you di if such a thing happened?
Not completely sure but probably already fought this battle on the metaphysic level, suffered a lot (lost part of a toe on my left-foot, broke my left arm and have been cut - mostly on the left side of my body - quite a lot) and in the end came out VICTORIOUS!! :balloon:

I think that is a very good point to ponder, are we more or less militarized than would be the average ET?

how to begin to answer that? hypothetically- we could argue that just removing Germany from the equation- two world wars, or a single individual:l Adolf Hitler, might have altered our entire perception of militarization, prevented nuclear weapons ever existing..
or prior founders of the German socialist movement, or Robert Cecil -winner of the 1937 Nobel peace prize for preventing western opposition..

We could argue that our military capability is the result of extraordinary circumstances that might never have occurred otherwise, not much different than everything else on this planet!

I think I would be optimistic though, that good always ultimately wins over evil, perhaps a malevolent ET might be followed by a benevolent one seeking to destroy it?

If I were a gambling man though, I'd probably bet we are alone, to the subject of the forum; the primary intended beneficiaries of creation

If aliens came here with the intent of getting rid of humans, they'd go a long way towards defending themselves simply by constructing an underground base on the far side of the Moon. Sending nuclear missiles there would be no easy feat for us at our current tech level and might not even work if the bases are miles underground. The aliens would be practically untouchable. Given that they were able to make it many light-years to get here, they must have access to some very high energy technology like nuclear fusion or even direct matter-to-energy conversion. They could use these power sources to fire upon us from a distance using directed energy weapons. Or they could manufacture droves of "rods from God" to drop on us. Or genetically-engineer a virus to kill us (being delivered inside of a harmless-looking, football-sized meteor). Any civilization capable of reaching us from the stars is going to have much more knowledge of how to use matter and energy to their advantage than us. Barring a miracle, we'd be sunk.

Depends on how advanced they are compared to us. If they are less advanced then we could easily win via good old fashioned conventional warfare. Of course if their technology is that much behind our own then they would never be able to reach earth anyway so its a moot point. If their technology is at or slightly above our lv then you would prob need both conventional and asymmetrical warfare and winning would be much more difficult. They could reach earth but it would take decades or even centuries and it would likely be a one way trip for any invasion force they send... if they don't win then they are effectively screwed. If their tech is much greater then ours then conventional warfare would prob not be effective for long (if at all) and we would need to resort to asymmetrical warfare to have any chance of fighting them. Assuming they have some sort of FTL technology they would be able to reach earth in months or even weeks and could send reinforcements if their first attack were to fail. This assumes they are here for conquest and not simply extermination and colonization. If they are here for extermination then we would prob be screwed as they can simply wipe out the human race from orbit. Hopefully if they do come they will be the second typed listed in this post.

I've heard that if they actually had a spacecraft that could withstand space debris while travelling near the speed of light in order to get here, their spacecraft would be pretty much impenetrable, it could take anything we throw at it, including nuclear warheads.
what if they fly in low speed colony ships

imo we are nearly ot even there technologically
