As the headline say, How can humans live without a soul/spirit?

If there is no form of spirit or soul that is the true being, what is keeping us alive?

Please respect that people will have different understanding and views on this, no need for snarky or bad words toward others who may see it different than you do.

I believe the flesh is just a vessel

And that we are our soul/spirit

Although I prefer the term "consciousness"

But I can imagine a person who behaves and does things but who isn't conscious as we are - who is controlled directly by The Simulation rather than by any consciousness. Basically, a "non-player character"

I think there are more NPCs than people think and that I have encountered several.

I've done pretty well for the last 55 years.

    Prana.

I am Atman in my true nature, but it's not what's keeping me alive. Fluids and nutrients are what keeps this bag 'o bones kickin'.

My car doesn't die when I decide to stop driving it and get out. ;)

A mixture of nutrient and water extracted by the digestion of food and air to maintain metabolic process. If you stop those long enough, you will die. You could reduce life to a staggeringly complex chemical reaction that requires some energy to maintain itself.

Same thing that keeps cells and other living organisms alive.

    Ones adapted environment.

As for the spark, look at animated matter.

Yep. We are an environment as well.

One might ask the same questions of other life, given that we seem to have evolved as much as all others have done, but with perhaps a more favourable outcome - for us, that is. Do they live without a spirit or soul?

My understanding is a bit flipped from yours; one being has many living forms.

I'm not really clear on what a soul or spirit is supposed to be or how one would work. I think the time to ask whether they're necessary would only be after we've established that everyone has one, which itself could only come after establishing that souls exist at all.

OTOH, there's plenty of evidence to suggest that the things I hear typically described as part of one's "soul" has a physical basis.

Are you looking for a deeper answer than "our metabolism"?

Those things I agree do not transmigrate or transcend death of the body.

Heck, I have a hard time on most days remembering what I walked into a room for. :p

Well, I know I'm conscious and I think that it's reasonable to assume that other people are too

I can assure you that I'm conscious and I think it makes sense that you are conscious too

I'd hate it to be a single player game, and to be surrounded by insentient NPC zombies

That would be bleak and lonely

Might I suggest first asking the same question about a bacterium? Bacteria are alive. But most people would deny they have a soul or a spirit. How does that happen?

Ultimately, life is chemistry. We are alive because of the chemical properties of oxygen, carbon, nitrogen, etc. I see nothing else to be required.
