This isn't new. We've known for quite some time that there are carriers that show no symptoms. Hence the need to mask up.

But now we know that they are affected by Covid 19 and get scars in their lungs.
There's no evidence that the damage is permanent or irreversible.

No, but it is new, that there are actual observable effects in asymptomatic carriers, so some of them are in effect not asymptomatic.
True. There is still much to be learned about this virus and how to control/eradicate it, so I'm sure there will be many new discoveries.
