So I'm a seasoned panhandler. I make about 30 dollars a day on average.

I really want to work though , so now I'm going to look for odd jobs like shoveling snow, mowing lawns, cleaning cars and houses, landscaping, trimming bushes, pulling weeds, and whatever.

So, what is a good idea for a sign that basically says "Do you have a job I can do for you?"

I'm sure that's not the safest way to look for work. A serial killer might pick me up with a phony job offer; but I'm not afraid of death. It's risk I'm willing to take.

Help me with some ideas for a sign. Thanks! :)

If you have access to the internet why not just use seek or whatever the American equivalent is? Make yourself a little profile and let the offers come to you. Everything is online these days. (Can you tell I’m a millennial lol.)

The worst thing that could happen is I die. The best thing that could happen is I die.

In the public library they can direct you to your state's employment web site, maybe help you make an application on there. I know of several states that do this, so maybe yours does. It probably does. On there people will advertise jobs and look for workers.

Another option is a temp agency. If you're not sure whether you can be reliable for steady work, a temp agency can sometimes get you daily work. There are different kinds of temp agencies. Some of them only hire people with bachelor's degrees and business expertise, but some will hire you for odd jobs. When you get a chance get yourself some steel toed boots. That will help.

We had discussed previously about where a friend of mine IRL with a similar history to yours landed a job (and they've recently promoted her). Apply at a local fitness center.

I know fast food hasn't worked out for you previously, but there are many fast food places that are looking for a position called a "porter." Essentially, the responsibilities are general cleaning, light maintenance, putting received truck orders away, etc. Not as fast paced as your previous experience at a fast food restaurant. Could be right up your alley. I've employed people in recovery for this position on many occasions and it's worked out well.

You making 30 bucks a day doing nothing and you want to quit?

If a serial killer picks you up you like at him (or her) and make the comment as to how ironic it is to have two serial killers in the same car...

Criminal record or not? Criminal record, you're pretty much boned as far as any job you haven't mentioned already. I don't know if I'm remembering correctly but I do remember you mentioning altercations in past posts. Though specifically -- no one will hire you with violent charges, retail won't hire you with theft or violence, and jobs that involve machinery will not hire on drug offenses/violence/or theft. The only way around that is just starting your own business.

I wouldn't call it "doing nothing." Panhandlers in my neck of the woods brave the frigid temps to earn their dinner. I'm confident its even more challenging in @PopeADope's neck of the woods.

We do what we do to survive. If you have better advice to give those in recovery, please feel free to do so.

While I appreciate your offering of hopelessness, that's a fallacy. There are plenty of businesses that would employ someone with such a history.

Actually, no. I used to be in the same working organization as convicted killers, severely mental disabled, people like me with disabilities, and homeless all in the same room literally looking for jobs.

The state probation office can give resources, In VA/US any person on probation need to either have a job or be looking.

@PopeADope I like the ideas here. If I can think, if you have a employment center they may can help with resources for anyone with "bad" backgrounds. To them not paying for child support and not paying taxes are pretty much the same boat of trying to get a job.

I THINK in some states if you've been "crime free" whatever that means you can apply for more stable jobs like the temp agencies mentioned. My brother got arrested for attenpted shop lifting and couldn't work I think five years. Now he works security at a small retail store!

    Keep trying.

l have worked with folks with criminal histories and drug charges, but they were able to show up for work on time. I worked with one alcoholic who was highly skilled, but he kept disappearing. They gave him several chances but let him go. It was unfortunate, because he was amazing at his job. It usually comes down to reliability I think.

Any place that hires a lot of people for the same position, such as call centers. If you need a job, there is a call center that needs you.

Collections? They will hire you, if you are willing to call people to collect on debts. That's not for everybody. Honestly to make it in a job like that you need a lot of motivation like six starving children at home.
