Hello, I'm ScottySatan. That's not my real name. I'm a young American biologist working in Scottish academia. My technical specialties are microscopy, medicine, evolution, genetics, cell and molecular biology, science education, and writing non-fiction. I'm arrogant. I won't be arguing much about creationism vs. evolution here.

I was raised a christian. Being someone who wants to excel in everything he does, I was a very devout christian when I was a kid. My christian years were in a more moderate time, just before the USA decided that zealous christianity was the fashion. I didn't hear people argue about abortion or evolution.

After dropping out of high school, I chose higher education institutions that emphasized teaching students how to think rather than spoon-feeding scientific facts. For more than 10 years in a row I studied 80 hours a week on how to construct new knowledge: what makes proof, and what does not. It took ten years of intensive training, reading, meditation, and getting to know people from around the world to go from a seed of doubt to becoming convinced that there is no god.

During my devout and my doubtful christian years, I was ashamed of my faith. I was increasingly ashamed of what I saw my brothers do. I was ashamed of countless examples of blatant illogic with no will to improve. I clung to my remaining faith by telling myself, "I don't have to be like them to be a good christian. I don't have to follow the words of a modern man. I've read the bible and I can go by that". But then I started to learn about how the bible was created. I saw it was no different.

The instant I convinced myself that there was no god, it became immediately clear that there was no reason to uphold the commandments. There was no reason for morality beyond the benefits of reproductive success. There was no longer a reason for me to hold myself back for fear of the afterlife. I WAS FREE.

I remembered from my religious studies who else felt this way: the Satanists. I have cast off my yolk and I've never looked back. I am a much happier person now.

I've been casually (non-intensively) studying Satanism for a few years now. I've sought out and met a lot of others claiming to be like me. Most were deluding themselves. I don't understand why so many people want to be a Satanist when they are clearly not. Maybe it's the romance of being an "alien elite".

I've checked out most of the Satanic organisations out there, online and in person. I still couldn't tell you what kind of Satanist I am, if there is more than one kind. Right now I want to check out the Temple of Set. What attracts me to them the most is that they, unlike other churches I know, actually get up off of their ***** and do something. They ravenously seek self improvement. I want to be a polymath some day. The Setians, however, are secretive.

I joined the forum because I saw some Setians here. I wanted to get to know some and get a sponsorship to join the Temple if I decided to take the plunge. I wanted to use you for selfish reasons. But I'll be damned if I haven't found a lot of interesting stuff here. I'm learning. I want to participate. I'll start by finally giving an introduction. I'll keep making posts if I have something to say. Meanwhile, I'm working on the reading list published on the Temple of Set website.

    Thank you.

I'm here doing a postdoc fellowship. I'll be moving back to the US by the end of next year.

It's great to be in Scotland. I have mostly British ancestry and it's nice to see where I came from.

    Hi Scotty.
(Good that you should make 170 posts before introducing yourself. Defying convention - I like it!)

The Scottish government is very ambitious and is practically begging highly skilled people to come study or work here. Skilled people tend to make more money than they would in the US.

Get a desirable vocation and you're in.

    Edited to add:
I just saw a historical site that reminds me. If you want to see Scottish history, keep in mind that for >99% of the Scots, history is GRIM.

It was an early Victorian textile factory. Hell on earth by todays standards, yet peole came in droves hoping to find work there.
