why would a person need to go to a physical hell somewhere else; if they were already being demonized, bullied, antagonized, terrorized, oppressed on earth?

Sometimes I think people become tangled up in asking the wrong questions (yes, there is such a thing). Rather, why not ask, "Why even believe in the mythological concept of hell?"

I feel the afterlife can be, at times, a dual-punishment, if true and it happens the way some people think.

Because damning others is easy. Understanding them not only takes effort, it is damning itself to those who would gain from sowing discord and division.

That escapes me as I need to study more just how much the Christian doctrine of hell is influenced by works like Dante's.

I'm already skeptical about any idea of it just based on the tactics used by some preachers who strongly promote the idea.

punishment happens all the time. no need to feel like going anywhere else.

jesus called them vipers, and children of hell.

hell is a state of mind. the concept isn't as far fetched as you would believe. it can be as near the person next to you, who feels the need to control others but has no control over themselves.

engtangling their own lives and desires by enslaving another to their idea of heaven. i've been locked out of heaven.

True hell is fully understanding another tormented soul, but being able to do little to help them. True hell is catching a virus, recovering from it, then being hit with a second, different kind due to a weakened immune system.

I don't think we should confound the matter of mental and physical anguish with a mythological concept. To truly stand firmly in reality, one must separate one's self from the fantasy.

true hell is when someone tries to enslave you to their beliefs, their craziness. trying to warp your reality into their imagination.

all the ghouls come out to play. prodding, poking, demons on self's back gnawing

    shake it off

    shake it off

but that is what hell is.

the body doesn't leave this experience per the bible. it returns to the earth that it created it from. only the spiritual = mental goes on to the next plane.

    i've played this game before.

    shake it off

    shake it off

it's hard to dance with devil on your back

I like my fantasy, my mythology, my philosophical rabbit-holes, and my what-ifs, although some might consider me an easier person to discuss religious concepts with than some, as I'm not a Christian, an evangelical or a fundamentalist, and I also lean toward being politically neutral. Although you might see me play a light form of devil's advocate, too, at times, to fill in the gaps. Like, I'm not a Christian, so my discussion of a Christian's view on hell are limited to bouncing ideas off people and exploring the thread subject, and the things that I've heard, and things I've picked up from study or interaction with others.

However, we might still be onto something with mixing mythology and real experiences for purpose of discussion though, maybe, as they weren't invented by the OP, but seem to be remarks tackled in some Abrahamic circles like those of the Baha'i faith - if we want to argue them and not attack a straw man, we have to address their belief that "The Christian/Bible concept of hell is mental anguish". I think.

    Did I get that right?

The doctrine of Hell is actually more influenced by the Book of Enoch, which the New Testament quotes, and the Apocalypse of Peter, which was Dante's main inspiration and regarded as an authoritative text by many early Christians.

It is what you get when the republic tolerates non and antiChristians. As official spokesman for the Consttutional convention, John Adam's clearly stated, "THIS CONSTITUTION ONLY WORKS FOR A MORAL AND CHRISTIAN PEOPLE". What we have in 2022 is evident from what the courts have imposed upon us, no one invited the founders.

    Don't forget Hieronymus Bosch.

The Christian concept of hell seems to be not based on the bible but on the works of Dante and Bosch. I am pleased that when a Christian threatens me with hell for non believef in their particular version of god then i am being threatened with 12th and 13th century comedy and art ;-)

This thread isn't about the founding fathers and what they did/didn't think about christianity.

FYI christianity isn't an exclusively american idea. Hell isn't an exclusively christian concept either

also moral people don't go around trying to control others with their beliefs. that tends to be a criminal thing; especially when it becomes life threatening.

people who try to control another with their beliefs, are practicing hypocrisy. it flies in the face of the golden rule.

my hair is mostly white now. no one else in my family has hair as white as mine.

i've also finally become fully diabetic. evidently stress can push you into a state of diabetes. best wishes in your journey from darkness to light
