I honestly didn't know where to put this. It's religious but focused on those who believe jesus speaking to them.

I've heard (and songs sung) of believers hearing jesus-maybe in a small voice or a presence. I understand those whose loved one has passed. Many get dreams of their loved one and they feel a presence of love and protection. I haven't had dreams of my loved one but I have protection (working on love).

To me, jesus (one who is written) is a stranger. So, hopefully focused on insightful conversation and not door to conversion, how does jesus (the person) hear you?

A loved one yes. A stranger? Near 2,000 years ago? That's mind boggling.

My friend used to hear Jesus all the time.

    It was his boss's name.

I suspect those who believe they hear Jesus in a more traditional sense view Jesus as being deified, and think of it more as communion with God, rather than being a person who once lived and has now expired.

So to say one hears christ means they are in communion with him?

If you want to hear a list of ways that revelation (God speaking to you) might occur, try the first chapter of the Book of Mormon!

I think that is what they mean. I'm not an expert in the topic, however.

People have " heard voices " for eons

Socrates, as an example, heard a voice that advised him against certain actions ( Like becoming a politician )

The problem, I believe, is that there is no way to distinguish them from one's own internal dialogue

Does there need to be distinguished?

It is an inclination, like a spiritual arrow pointing you in certain direction(s). It is a fragment of your human nature given voice to inspire compassion, unconditional love, forgiveness, humility, redemption, and salvation (in the case of Jesus).

That inclination, whether heard like a voice or felt like a conscience, helps one navigate the paths of life and helps open one’s eyes to the possibilities open to you when embracing these sides of your human nature.

Other gods (or even entities like Satan), no matter who or what they are or may be, tend to act in the same way for us. Though, the sides of human nature those gods inspire vary from deity to deity.

I would think that's a personal choice as long as you aren't making claims to others ( like people claiming to channel letters from Jesus on the internet, as an example )

The point is that this phenomenon has existed for a long time

The internet is full of crazy stuff... wouldn't it be allowable that the person believe they're channeling letters from Jesus, and up to the person reading to decide if they want to accept it, or label it BS and move on to another web page?

Sure, we're all free to believe what we like

For some, they'll readily believe anything, for others, not so much. Some of us require rigorous proof and that's where the problem really starts ( The onus of proof only lays in the lap of those openly making claims )

When I read about these things, however, and how they were treated classically, it always makes me wonder ...

    Magid (Jewish mysticism) - Wikipedia

Do these voices tell people " Hey, this is _______, I want you to tell people you heard my voice and I told you to tell people you speak for me "

    or do they say

" Speak these words to the people "

I only ask this because it seems like people who claim _____ speaks to them, do it because they want to draw attention to themselves, not to ________

An example, there's a random chat site I used to visit regularly, and on this site was a man who was constantly claiming he was a prophet

He never made prophecies or clarified past ones, he just kept talking about how he was a prophet
