DEERFIELD BEACH, FL (September 20, 2004) --- Food For The Poor, the foremost international relief organization working in Haiti, is responding to the recent floods in the northern sections of the country caused by Hurricane Jeanne. Initial news reports coming from the affected areas indicate that most of the city of Gonaives is under water, and Port-au-Paix and Ile de la Tortue are also experiencing severe flooding. Teams from FFP's headquarters in the capital are poised to survey the affected areas and assess the relief that will be needed. Food For The Poor, who implements feeding programs throughout Haiti, maintains significant facilities in Port-au-Prince and Cap-Haitien, where supplies of food, medicine and emergency relief supplies are available and will be directed to Gonaives and any other affected areas.

Food For The Poor is the largest NGO operating today in Haiti, serving over 1,100,000 people in all areas of the country. A distribution network, consisting of over 8,000 churches, missionaries, orphanages, hospitals and schools is in place, and is the most effective means to ensure that the aid is getting to the poorest of the people who are in the most need.

According to Robin Mahfood, president of Food For The Poor, "Our dedicated staff and facilities are prepared to handle this emergency, and we are able to swiftly aid the victims of the floods in Haiti. Our hearts go out to the Haitian people, who have suffered so much this year through the political turmoil and the devastating floods."

Food For The Poor continues to fulfill its commitment to the entire Caribbean area through its major involvement with ongoing relief efforts to the islands of Grenada, the Bahamas and Jamaica, who have also experienced severe hurricane damage. Major relief efforts, consisting of food, emergency supplies, building materials and medical assistance are all underway in these countries.

Food For The Poor, the 4th largest international relief organization in the United States, works in 16 countries throughout the Caribbean and Central America. Food For The Poor provides food, emergency relief assistance, education, housing, healthcare and micro-enterprise development assistance to hundreds of thousands of the poorest of the poor. The organization maintained a low overhead ratio of 4.7% in 2003. To assist with the relief efforts or for additional information, call 1-800-487-1158 or write:
