It does and you can get potato bins now which grow lots of potatoes from one plant,my uncle called it “teasing” where you plant the seed potato and cover it,then when it sprouts through the soil you let it grow a couple of inches and cover it again,you need a segment box for this but easy to make and you can do this process as high as you want.

You can use the same method for anything that grows below ground although maybe not asparagus because of woodyness (if that’s even a word) but really thought out of necessity,ww1&2 were mothers of invention.
