It is said that the shaD-Goswami (the 6 goswamis that were disciples Chaitanya Mahaprabhu), were vraja-Gopis from the time of KRshNa-avatAr who had taken birth again in Kali Yuga (17th century) out of compassion for mankind, to teach bhakti.
Gopi Gita - The Song of the longing heart with commentary by Sri Swami Vishwananda A retelling of a small part of the 10th canto of the Bhagavata Purana called Gopi Gita. Personally I‘m wary of Vishwananda‘s overly emotional style but here it fits well.
