Are those who live by faith alone and refuse to do the work of the Spirit, rotten fruit?

    James 1
23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do. 26 Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless.

i think you're a little confused on whose responsible for what. as a fruit, the fruit should be constantly producing; especially when in season and mature enough to produce. it's not the harvesters responsibility for the fruit to produce; especially if one planted and another is expected to harvest. its the plant that must produce.

i can understand when not in season and physically immature but a full grown plant is expected to produce something for the seasonal harvest.

I don't think it is about refusing. It is about not knowing how. The shepherds are at fault, I think. They may be considered rotten fruit, perhaps.

I wonder why stop at James 1:23-26 when at James 2:26 it says faith without works is dead.
So, to me that means we should try to cultivate the 'fruit of God's spirit' as listed at Galatians 5:22-23
Which is: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, mildness and self control.
After all, No one was ever arrested for cultivating God's fruit in one's life.
Those attributes or qualities of course would include keeping control of one's tongue, or one's language.
Continuing to James 3:5 because a little misuse of the tongue can figuratively kindle a BIG forest fire.
James forewarns us about our imperfect tongues at James 3:8. That can remind us of Jesus' words found at Matthew 7:20 how one's behavior could reveal them - Matthew 7:17-19.

Do you not know that all those can be faked?

I find that fruit is the finished or final product that a fruit tree brings forth.
So, while in the growing process of becoming a fruit, the fruit is still Not a ripe fruit.
A good tree will bring forth good fruit, whereas a rotten tree will bring forth bad fruit.
If we are a symbolic ' good tree ' then we will bring forth 'good fruit ' (conduct, behavior, truthful) as per Matthew 7:17-20

Do you really believe that conduct can't be faked? Also, what is the difference between conduct and behavior?

A person can behave well, but not because of the will of God, but for his own will. Do you call that good fruit too?

you can have faith without works but you can't have works without faith.

people do what they believe. they don't do what they don't believe to be productive.

    don't believe me?

    Matthew 21:28-32
The Parable of the Two Sons
28 “What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work today in the vineyard.

29 “‘I will not,’ he answered, but later he changed his mind and went.

30 “Then the father went to the other son and said the same thing. He answered, ‘I will, sir,’ but he did not go.

31 “Which of the two did what his father wanted?”

    “The first,” they answered.

Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you. 32 For John came to you to show you the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes did. And even after you saw this, you did not repent and believe him.

@URAVIP2ME is calls cultivating love, peace, joy, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, mildness and self-control "works". But, the Bible calls them, good and perfect gifts. So, when someone without faith exhibits any of those, and they do sometimes, is it by faith?

    Hebrews 11:1
    James 1:17

A person can have ' blind faith ' (credulity) but can Not have real faith without works according to James 2:26.
Sure a person can say one thing and do another, or vice versa.
I find Jonah too was a good example. Jonah's faith wavered, but in the end Jonah's faith was strong in works.

I have observed the opposite. You can't have faith without works if the Bible definition of faith is correct. It says, "evident demonstration". Doesn't it? Works is a sign of faith. Also, I have seen God work through people who have no belief in God. So, they have works, but not faith.

believing in god, or not, isn't what belief is; especially if God is seen as separate from self. the lack of love is the cause for lack of fruit. a belief, an idea, a thought is required for an action to occur.

Love doesn't create a problem, man does with selfish desires. you cannot serve love and self-glorification.

there are rotten fruits, sure, in many cases I can not know if they a rotten or not, not usable for sure. I had apples that looked good outside but were green , rotten or good. The same with some teachers: they would have many follovers but one need to get some light to see their faults. So, unless I know, I assume that people potentially good but, may be , green:
11When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things.

Besides ripening after picking some fruits spoil quickly after picking.
Since ' good trees ' produce ' good fruit ' then at the ripe time (right time) the fruit would be good for eating.
Eating it on that day or soon after picking the fruit would still be good for food.
Whereas a ' bad tree ' produces poor or sickly fruit if it produces at all.
So, a ' bad person ' (figurative bad tree) would Not cultivate 'good fruit' as listed at Galatians 5:22-23.

belief and work are not exclusive to a religion, a culture. a result has to have a cause but a cause does not necessarily have a result.

in politics they are identified as armchair politicians.

in social terms they are called armchair socialists

words without actions are just noises
