Gnosticism

What, exactly, is it, in a nutshell? How is it similar to and different from Christianity and other religions?

A gnostic believes

1. That this world is full of suffering
2. The Creator of this physical world is not the true God, and is considered imperfect or evil.
3. The true God did not create anything. He's perfect and incorruptible.
4. We are imprisoned in this physical world.
5. Salvation / Awakening is achieved through knowledge.
6. Divinity is where we belong, and it's where we shall return after awakening.

Gnosticism is a blanket term that covers many schools of thought. Examples are Sethian Gnosticism, Valentinian Gnosticism, Mandaeism and Manichaeism.
