Global warming poll

Discussion in 'General Debates' started by Augustus, Aug 24, 2019.

?
  1. No. There is no global warming or at least not enough to worry about.

  2. No. There is global warming, but it is simply part of a natural cycle.

    2.6%
  3. Maybe. There is a small chance humans are causing global warming, but it's probably a natural cycle.

    7.7%
  4. Maybe. I'd say global warming is roughly equally likely to be human driven or natural

    0 vote(s)
    0.0%
  5. Uncertain. We just don't know enough to make much of a claim either way

    2.6%
  6. Probably. GW is likely to be human driven, but climate science is too complex to be highly confident

    10.3%
  7. Almost certainly. The science is highly accurate, but we always need to retain a little bit of doubt

    17.9%
  8. Definitely. There is no doubt humans are causing a significant degree of global warming

Seeing as it's discussed here quite often, just a quick poll to see people's thoughts on whether or not humans are causing global warming and their degree of confidence in belief.

Hopefully the options cover enough to accommodate most people :)

Just to be clear, saying you believe humans are causing global warming doesn't mean you necessarily think 100% of global warming is the result of human society. There may be multiple causes, but, for the purpose of this poll, if you think human society is one significant cause, this means you agree humans are causing global warming.

Probably. Flying often over Sicily I watch the Etna snowy parts smaller and smaller in winter

I am 100% sure we humans are the main cause of global warming.

I am happy to take part in this poll; however, I have already posted elsewhere results of several polls that show the opinions. Approximately 60% of the non-scientific community; the general public; believe that climate change exists and/or is a result of human activity.

I like the idea of a consensus, along with evidence, to help us separate fact from fiction, fact from belief. But not everything in life is a matter of public opinion; and not everyone in the public is qualified to give that opinion. What "most" people believe to be the "truth" may not necessary be the truth; in fact, it rarely is.

So by all means, let's continue. But don't fall into the trap of agrumentum ad populum. Regardless of your (or my) opinion, imho, it don't mean squat, unless you are a climatologist.

Only in America? Or is this an average of multiple international polls?

Pretty sure it would be much higher in many other countries.

    It's just for fun :D

Interesting to see who here thinks what and to what degree of certainty. Other than this is has no real value.

I voted definitely despite the fact that technically no scientific conclusion can be considered 100% certain. It's definite beyond reasonable doubt, based on the available evidence.

I grudgingly had to click "almost certainly" despite really wanting to click on "Definitely." I have to accept that there's always some chance of being wrong, if only intellectually. I am however as certain that global warming exists and that humans contribute to it as I am that gravity won't cease to function if I step off a cliff.

This year alone, we've had a couple of insane heat-waves in England. Last month we had the hottest weather ever recorded in England. We also had the hottest February on record.
Then there's been the other extreme weather over the last few years. Blizzards, thunderstorms and so much rainfall that the town of Whaley Bridge had to be evacuated as there was a real danger of a dam burst wiping it out.

I was uncertain between the last 2 choices because although I believe in human induced global warming, it seems scientific to retain enough doubt that if new evidence came to light, I would be able to change my mind, but in the end voted with my belief that there is definitely human induced global warming, and went with the last option of there is no doubt.

Hey don't let that stop you, this is "science by consensus"!

It kind of reminds me of a second grade science class where the teacher brought in a hamster and immediately the fuss w/ the kids was whether the animal was a boy hamster or a girl hamster. Unable to get the kids to just admit they didn't know she had them take a vote and leave it at that.

Earth warmer or not? We vote on it and it's 'settled science'.

You've never looked at the data have you?

You've just gobbled up whatever someone has told you and never taken the time to go through the thousands of pages of raw data to make a conclusion for yourself.

The data is inconclusive because we don't know where the earth's natural cycle of warming and cooling ends, and where humans impact on the environment begins.

I voted "Definitely" because nobody asked me for my "justified belief" and because Alexandra wanted me to. :)

The overwhelming scientific consensus is "Definitely...", and there's really no reason at this point to deny what we clearly see happening. .

Humans are almost certainly causing Global Warming.
The science is not "highly accurate". Climate prediction models are notoriously poor at predicting.
I don't know of anyone who's life has been significantly impacted by Global Warming.

Deforestation, Greenhouse gases, changes in weather, frequent earthquakes, rise in Sea levels I'd say definitely.
