TV actress Gina Carano is in hot water for posting this:

Apparently people viewed this as outrageous hate speech (or something), and Lucasfilm fired her.

I guess this is me being my privileged, clueless self, but why is this a bad idea? Seems to me she’s asking us to try to learn from history, no? To see where things are heading and maybe make a course correction?

She said Republicans were being persecuted the way Jews were by the Nazis,

Does it seem a fair comparison, the treatment of Republicans in the US today and the treatment of Jews in Nazi Germany? That really the direction of travel?

She's got form; she mocked people who state their preferred pronouns online, by placing the words “beep/bop/boop” on her Twitter profile.

Anti-semitism was rife in Germany before the nazis. "The government first made..." is either utter ignorance or deliberately lying.

Conflating "simply being" Jews is different than "political view". One is about who you are; the other about the views you hold. Trying to put them together wrong and utterly minimizes the evil of hating people for who they are. It is equivalent to hating Muslims for being Muslims rather than focusing on terrorists and extremists.

"how is that different" is a statement of right wing extremism.

I think she probably got fired for trivializing the atrocities Jews faced at the hands of Nazis by comparing them to imagined persecution based on her victim complex. Her posts should be put into perspective by looking at her track record and political views:

Gina Carano dropped from Mandalorian after 'abhorrent' posts

She's an anti-science lunatic with a persecution complex who is promoting harmful views and irresponsible rhetoric on social media. I say good riddance.

she made the point that persecution is persecution. Yes, in method it might look different, but the underlying idea that people can be judged based on their beliefs is not problematic to me. I like her as an actress, and though I don't disagree with everything she says, I have no problem with this one.

Just uttering the word "Jew" in Hollywood is considered a form of holocaust.

This seems to be conflating the message with the messenger, no?

Let me put this another way: it seems that this particular comment got a lot of hate, not whatever else she might have said in the past..

I kind of liked her too. The political opinions of actors don't really hold a lot of value for me though. She could be a Communist  for all I care.

Probably best to not talk about ethnicities other than your own, or really not talk about them at all.

If Mel Gibson can continue to work in Hollywood after what he said, then why shouldn't she?

I think its because Jews were put into ghettos and had other Jews police them. Sometimes with violence. That from my understanding created a myriad of issues and problems.

Yea , Jews beat other Jews in the streets. That much is true if that is what the op meant.

I don't think it was so much the government as the mob mentality against the Jews. The government just took advantage of the mob mentality that already existed.

I think her implying it was the government that started it was her mistake.

People are sheep. They tend to jump on the most convenient target to blame their troubles with life on.

People on the Left don't like being compared to Nazis. Well, people on the right don't either. Few do I'd think.
Trying to take away a person's moral high ground, nobody likes that.

If the person's whose moral high ground has enough political clout to cause you problems, I suppose you got to deal with that.

That seems a bit too black and white.

That's also too black and white. Being a Jew is a complicated thing. Yes, it often implies an ethnic heritage, but it is ALSO a set of ideas. For example, a person can become a Jew.

I would amend that to say that it could be a statement from any extremist.

Going against this kind of flow takes courage and I can respect that. GC is a human strong in body and strong in mind, and someone real too, someone genuine. Her kind is rare and is certainly not normal.

Yeah. I don't think that her political views should be considered when it comes to acting unless she is actively trying to harm people. Especially in the US. It seems to me like its liberals getting upset with Republicans who openly express their views.

It is kind of distasteful, at the very least.
It’s a trivialising of the atrocities committed in Nazi Germany. I understand using hyperbole to prove a point, but maybe don’t use a great atrocity, if only to be safe from a PR standpoint.
I don’t know if she should like lose her job over it, but that’s up to Disney.

    Good point I think.

The moment you create hate in people the trouble will start. The type of hate is not the real issue here. Hate is known to blind people anyway

Interesting. I didn't read the tweet as trivializing anything - more as a caution to where much of today's extremism could lead us.

So I can ask this of everyone - if we do want to provide a cautionary tale, why not use a horrific example?
