Are those two words antonyms? I mean synonyms... are they synonyms?

Can refugees be handpicked like immigrants?

You don't get it. The US decides which Immigrants get in unless they sneak over the border with Mexico. This usually means that the illegal immigrants are from Central America.

Your Turks, Arabs.... basically every Immigrant from over the Atlantic is hand picked. They had to earn their right to live in the US.

This is not the case in Europe. Therefore it is absolutely bogus to compare the two situations with each other.

I don't know why you think you are unique in this regard; our local bigots say the exact same thing, except that the evil-liberals-from-afar are those socialist Europeans, and the social-problems-that-only-we-truly-understand are blacks, "Mexicans", and Indians. Switch out the labels, and the argument is identical. It's not a particularly convincing argument, especially when made to someone who has travelled a bit and knows that prejudice pretty much looks and acts the same in every language. But it is the argument. You didn't invent it. Everyone thinks that their underclass is the worst possible underclass, the one underclass in the world that truly deserves to be hated.
