From Gush Katif to 'the Fat Man's Stomach'

The Palestinian Authority announced on Tuesday a list of new names for the former settlements in the Gaza Strip and instructed the Palestinian media to stop using the former names.

The PA's Information Ministry noted that the list was not final and that more Arabic names would be issued in the near future. A source in the ministry said the decision to rename the former settlements was taken without consulting with Hamas and other Palestinian groups. Some Palestinians have demanded that the former settlements be renamed after Yasser Arafat or slain Hamas leaders Ahmed Yassin and Abdel Aziz Rantisi...

...Speaking to reporters after chairing a cabinet meeting in Gaza City, Qurei said the PA security forces would now focus on three areas: The industrial zone at Erez, the greenhouses left behind by the settlers and the Rafah border crossing. Qurei said that the disengagement does not mean the end of Israeli occupation. "The Israeli occupation hasn't ended," he said. "What we saw is the departure of the settlers."...

"There are many issues that haven't been resolved yet," he said. "The border, water and airspace should be under our control. The only borders were are prepared to accept are the 1967 borders." Qurei hailed Hamas and Islamic Jihad for their role in driving Israel out of the Gaza Strip. "The Israeli withdrawal and the dismantlement of the settlements is the result of our people's sacrifices and heroic resistance," he said. "No one can underestimate the role played by martyrs Yasser Arafat, Ahmed Yassin, Abdel Aziz Rantisi and [slain Islamic Jihad leader] Fathi Shikaki, as well as all the martyrs."
