Actually this verse can be read two different ways. The first way is, as you say, that there are many gods, but *I* am YOUR god, and I should be the only one of the gods that you worship. But there is a second way it can be read as well, and that is that "I" am your God, the ONLY god, and therefore you shouldn't waste your time worshiping other gods that do not exist.
