Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida on Tuesday signed legislation requiring the state's public colleges and universities to survey students, professors, and staff members about their political views in an effort to crack down on intellectual "indoctrination" on campuses.

    ...

The bill says the annual surveys would assess "intellectual freedom and viewpoint diversity" and determine "the extent to which competing ideas and perspectives are presented" and whether students, professors, and staffers "feel free to express their beliefs and viewpoints on campus and in the classroom."

    ...

The law, effective July 1, demands that students "be shown diverse ideas and opinions, including those that they may disagree with or find uncomfortable," the state's Department of Education said.

University professors and education experts in Florida have expressed concerns that the law would allow the state government to interfere with teaching; politicize faculty hiring, firing, and promotions; and stifle faculty and student speech.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signs a law punishing student 'indoctrination' at public universities and threatens budget cuts

One wonders how this law will play out when the thoughts and ideas they are opposed to are the ones being left out?

I suspect that this law will be a reactionary one used to "call out" places that the officials feel is not being indoctrinated in their favoured areas.

In other words, Florida is emulating China in cracking down on freedom of expression. All hail to the People's Republic of Florida - home of political correctness enforced by the state.

I've known about this for a bit. My only solace is that this will most likely be thrown out in the first court case to challenge it. If at that time it isn't thrown out I will move out of this state.

Why do I get the feeling that the panel of 'free speech judges' will consider discussion of Marxism or progressivism or paganism 'indoctrination' that must be erased but anti lgbt rhetoric, Christian supremacism, and anti-science and anti-intellectual conspiracies is 'free speech' that must be protected.

So who among those who previously complained about "Cultural Marxism" and "Leftist Indoctrination" at modern US universities is glad that the government of Florida is finally cracking down on these influences?

I mean, that has been the argument of anti-"Political Correctness" crusaders since the 1980s, so why wouldn't they?

Nefarious intent is the least of our problems.
Good intentions with unanticipated consequences will be the death of us all.

Oh there's plenty of atheists who have also fallen in the 'anti PC' rhetoric in a soft Jordan Peterson sort of way. Dismissing his Christian apologetics but joining in on fear of some policy maker telling them to use someone's chosen pronouns or something.

Why do you get the feeling that what universities indoctrinate will be considered indoctrination and what universities prevent from promulgation will be considered needing to be protected?

    The world may never know.

Unbound optimism oncoming: I hope that if they find a university or area where leftist ideas are being quashed and other ideas are being foisted that they will take the same action :D

    Hey-o!

Do you actually think that Christian universities actively prevent Christianity and homophobia from spreading among faculty and students on their campuses, or did you just not realize that these places also exist?

We know. It's hypocrisy. They will call anything against its value assessment indoctrination and only protects free speech when it's concerning those specific values it wants to perpetuate. Thus pushing Christian prayer in school (actual indoctrination) but forbidding a coven school club (actual free speech issue). Pushing analysis of the Bible as important literary and historical document (which I agree with, when framed as such) but banning socialist philosophers who were among the most influential modern figures because socialism bad.

Are you going to pretend that there isn't a spectrum of ideologies that different Christian universities adhere to?

I went to a private Christian university, Xavier(OH) go Muskies, and several of the professors there indoctrinated the ideas of leftism. My theology professor, great guy who thanked me for my debate and defense of traditional theology, espoused direct heresy, told the kids that they should put down their Bibles for 20 years, and taught nature was the most important facet of connecting to God.

That said, this directive is only for public universities. Private ones, whether they be in practical terms conservative Christian or neo-marxist, do not fall under the umbrella of its mandate.

I am not pretending anything, I am simply asking a question.

Do you believe all universities are hotbeds of Marxism, or is it only the public ones who brainwash their students into destroying Western civilization by caring about pronouns and LGBTQ issues?

Do you think this professor should have been removed from his post to protect freedom of speech from leftism?

Would you prefer it if these government regulations were to apply to private universities as well, including Christian ones?

Nope. I never complained about "Cultural Marxism" and "Leftist Indoctrination", though I've got problems with "political correctness".
