Some fictional religions are parodies, eg, The Flying Spaghetti Monster.
Some seem to have become real for followers, eg, Jedi.
I like Bokononism for its way of viewing reality & living in it.
    Bokononism - Wikipedia
Bokononism (/ˈboʊkoʊnɒnˌɪzəm/) is a religion invented by Kurt Vonnegut and
practiced by many of the characters in his novel Cat's Cradle. Many of the sacred
texts of Bokononism were written in the form of calypsos.[1]

Bokononism is based on the concept of foma, which are defined as harmless untruths.
A foundation of Bokononism is that the religion, including its texts, is formed entirely
of lies; however, one who believes and adheres to these lies will have peace of mind,
and perhaps live a good life. The religion's bible, The Books of Bokonon, begins:
"Don't be a fool! Close this book at once! It is nothing but foma! All of the true things
that I am about to tell you are shameless lies." The primary tenet of Bokononism is
to "Live by the foma that make you brave and kind and healthy and happy."

So, fellow posters....what appeals to you & why?

That's a secondary religion for most religious people and a primary religion for just about all non-religious folks nowadays.

The beautiful lies are usually preferable to the ugly truth.

Long ago, the late atheist social critic, author, essayist and dramatist, Gore Vidal, penned a wonderful little novel called Messiah.

It tells of an undertaker (seriously) from the Pacific Northwest has an unshakable epiphany where he realizes that death, as no-thing, is not to be feared. Death is nothing; nothing is a desirable state; therefore death, which is nothing, is a desirable end.

The undertaker is named John Cave ("a pair of initials designed to deceive the innocent", the narrator quips), and he finds that he is gifted with an almost paranormal power of suggestion, which is concentrated in the power of his eyes. Eventually, he preaches his message to small groups which are supported by local undertaker colleagues.
Then he is "picked up" by a successful public relations agent and a small board of directors who eventually put him on television (this is in the early 1950s), and from there his mission/career soars, because the television lens only enhances, rather than diminishes, his hypnotic gaze.

Soon, his message - "Cavesword" - becomes a world religion, while his solution (suicide) becomes his liberating "Cavesway". Eventually it becomes a suicide cult, and the narrator/protagonist must pit himself against Cave, Cavesword, and the cult's powerful elite.

A grand story, marred only by its dependence on television as a medium for dissemination of Cave's message. Today, Cave would be on computer screens across the world in a matter of minutes, hours and days. What took three years in the novel would probably take only a couple of weeks or so in today's interconnected world.

    Jesus does love us.

The aristocracy can kiss my grits.

Don't judge me Tom. That's God's job. I may go not go to Heaven.

If there is a god, it would be a being of pure love and pure logic, therefore anything devoid of reason or compassion cannot be of god. So contrary to the ancient fables of dead goat ****ers, you needn't worry about eternal damnation.

If I wanted a religion I would make up my own and borrow whatever I liked from other ones and not quote my source, I can pull the wool over my own eyes.

People have used patriotism and partisanship as good substitutes; same blind, uncritical, unquestioning fanaticism and devotion.
