Female nudity vs Male nudity

It is socially acceptable to view ads with topless men during daytime advertising but not topless women. I do not understand why this is.

It's a holdover from 16th and 17th puritanical American prudery.
Even exposing one's ankle in public had its consequences.

Never underestimate the power of religious bigotry and provincialism.

I think it somewhat may depend on the condition of the body in question as well.
A well toned, healthy, and athletic body may be more acceptable to be shown. (And this is the case in movies, magazines, and television)
If the body is out-of-shape/not looking healthy, then this is frowned upon more. Perhaps because people are afraid to say that showing up "heavier" people in a good light is not the example that should be upheld in society.

well...I assure you that most women would feel embarrassed in a men's locker room. do you deny it?
so I'm not that weird
They would not feel embarrassed if this became a normal situation. It is not naturally embarrassing.
A woman of a century ago would feel embarrassed to wear almost any of today's casual attire in public.
