Shakira and J.Lo: Over 1,300 complaints about Super Bowl halftime show - CNN

Families all over America gathered on Super Bowl Sunday to watch the Kansas City Chiefs battle the San Francisco 49ers, turning one of America's most beloved sports events into a cheerful family affair.

Then came half time.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) received 1,312 complaints from viewers who had something to say about the halftime show featuring pop queens Shakira and Jennifer Lopez.

The singers danced on poles, twerked, belly danced and made more than a few sexually suggestive gestures.

They thought that the halftime show was too racy for family viewing.

Some of the complaints, which were sent to CNN by FCC officials and first obtained by WFAA, came from parents who felt their children were exposed to a "porno show." Other adults thought the show encouraged sex trafficking.

And some people were upset no public warnings were given before the show, which one viewer said was less a musical act than an "X-rated strip club performance."

I did see part of it, and it was quite racy, but I don't think it broke the barrier of "porno." I'm not sure how it would encourage sex trafficking either.

At least they didn't have any wardrobe malfunctions this time.

Some also brought up #metoo in the complaints:

Many complaints mentioned the "Me Too" movement and sex trafficking.

"In our country there has been a push for women's rights and more opportunities along with the Me too movement which is a good thing," one Ohio viewer said. "This takes us back to where women get their worth from their sexuality not their brains/personality and I don't appreciate it on a family friendly broadcast."

"This is not appropriate family entertainment as the Super Bowl advertises. It was appalling! And then having young girls join the spectacle," a Kentucky viewer said. "No wonder there is sex trafficking when you call this family entertainment. And where's the Me Too women? Do you not see the hypocrisy?"

Some people are threatening to boycott Pepsi, the Super Bowl, and even the NFL. They're really mad about this.

So, what do you think about this?

What should next year's Super Bowl show be?

Maybe they should just have high school marching bands playing wholesome, patriotic songs. I always thought those halftime shows were a bit overdone anyway.

So, 1300 complaints out of how many people watching it? Millions?

Some people get bent out of shape by things that are unremarkable.

Yeah, I suppose, although it's not the first time this sort of thing has come up. I thought it was slightly amusing in a way.

Lots of layers to the OP - interesting.

But the first thing that came to mind is the irony of saying:

"We don't want our kids exposed to people being sexy, we came to watch men repeatedly commit acts of violence against each other."

Some people might find big men in tight pants wresting each other to the ground sexy. Maybe they just found the half-time show the wrong kind of sexy?

I think it ultimately depends on ones personal ethical/moral boundaries. Some people see "twerking on a public platform" as simply a way to teach your 10 year old of what they should be doing when they are 14 regardless of the consequences. Others see it as an offense to the family when all they wanted was an entertainment moment at half-time.

Usually, one letter or one phone call represents hundreds of other people who will never phone or write.

So, in essence, how much it bothers you will determine your ethical/moral standards.

1300 people living under a rock or the inability to change the channel. Yawn.

I want the Foo Fighters again. Last HT show I actually watched without mute. Granted I have a very limited list of music/musicians I like.

Those easily offended should just watch the Puppy Bowl next year. The kitty half-time show is not all bad either.

Not so racy. There are plenty of performances and music videos that are considerably racier.

Different people take their entertainment in different ways. Some like non violent musicians/singers putting on a free show. Some like to see a bunch of guys beating crap out of each other for possession of a ball.

While the last sentence isn't agreed, the rest is a good explanation!

Perhaps it would be easier to understand possibly after one has a 6-12 yr. old daughter?

I don't know if people will hear what you say here, though, if they want it to instead be about some preferred stereotyped prudery or religious stuff.

Also....as another libertine pointed out in another thread, it wasn't....truly sexy. It was...something less good than just normal attractive stuff. It's like....giving up a better attractiveness we all have for a lesser attractiveness that doesn't even really work.

I've only bothered with one Superbowl in my adult life. The only reason I agreed to go to the Superbowl party was because the host's wife was doing the food, and she's really good.

Two of the other attendees were Steve and his stepson Zeke. Steve is a serious orthodox Christian. He took Zeke for a walk outside during halftime because he didn't approve of the usual halftime entertainment, at least not for 14y/o boys in his charge. Zeke wasn't happy, but Steve runs his own family the way he thinks it should be run. And Zeke knew better than to cause trouble because Steve runs certain things like "family entertainment".

Steve doesn't complain or boycott he takes responsibility for his decisions. One was to watch the game with his son. Another was to prevent his son from being exposed to stuff like gyrating women on TV.

How do these people watch any television without collapsing into the fetal position?
They start out that way.
