Apparently, Bethesda had to record this 2 or 3 times to get enough voices:

Maybe a bit of a cheat but Elite was a classic with effective use of existing classical music.

For original compositions, I think the Tetris music played a major role in its success.

No, the original, yer young whipper-snapper. ;) Elite (video game) - Wikipedia

I think it might have been the sequel that had the music properly throughout the game.
I'm more a fan of Elite: Dangerous. The multiplayer is amazing. Almost as good as Eve Online. The devs who made Eve pretty much said "If it's not illegal, we don't care." So that means there are people flying around with the sole intent to swindle some helpless noob out of 4 hours of grinding. I'm one of those two, I'll let you decide which one. ;)

I’ve never played it but I hear it is very good. I’m not sure it’s fair to compare games with over 30 years between their development though, especially on factors like multilayer. :)

Anyway, this thread was about game music. Elite (and certainly it’s sequels) may have had all sorts of gameplay flaws and limitations but the series remains a pioneer in the field of in-game music.

Skyrim, hands down. Love the soundtrack (in fact I created a Pandora station based on it), and I find it to be quite therapeutic after a rough day at work.

Clearly the winner goes to Mick Gordon for both how he implements his music with algorithms, and the sheer badassery of his tunes.

But Most memorable?

There aren't technically any rules of behavior or conduct in EVE. It's very much like life in the real world the haves the have nots and the takers.
