Could evangelizing a specific religion, belief system, be a form of prostituting.

the original word as a verb means before + establishing, or standing up like a statue, or to be firm as in fixed, concrete, literal, real, or actual.

    prostitute v.

Of course. A form of mental, “spiritual” prostitution.

Not to say that all mental, “spiritual” prostitution are all negative.

The word is from the past participle 'prostitutum' of the verb 'prostare', to stand forth. So a prostitute is one who (passive voice) 'is stood forth', with the situational implication of being on display for the purposes of sale.

so in this case the thing being stood up and for sale is a religion. it was only later that it was more specific to sex for sale.

Yes, but I guess the term (considered from its Latin base and not its modern usage) fits just as well with anything else offered for sale.

There is indeed, as you imply, a marketplace of religions, which in the US in particular has something for everyone, and any number of spruikers and forms of advertising across the media.

So I take it you're asking, are those spruikers pimping for their churches? Hooking the johns in?

And if that's your question then I'd reply, well, if you want to look at it that way, yes they are. But there are other ways of looking at it.
