A few days ago the EU adopted a joint resolution condemning Iran and its treatment of women.
"The European Parliament resolution “condemns in the strongest terms the ongoing repression of women for objecting to compulsory veiling and for exercising their rights to freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly; calls on the Iranian Government to respect the freedom of Iranian women to choose their own dress code.” Texts adopted - Iran, notably the situation of women's rights defenders and imprisoned EU dual nationals - Thursday, 19 September 2019

But is this really an act of Islamophobia? By way of example, no one ever filed a resolution with the United Nations concerning the Jim Crow treatment of Black Americans. Has the EU gone overboard in condemning the social practices of other countries? I would suggest that this is Islamophobia at its best!

Ultimately this isn't about freedom but about dictating what women ought to wear. There are women who are happy to wear a veil, there are some that don't and some in between. Governments whether they enact compulsory dress codes or other governments call for freedom still amounts to dictating what women should do. EU essentially isn't saying give women a choice is not (in my opinion) about complete autonomy, its about essentially, and slowly westernizing cultures.

Precisely, it's quite shameful to see in all honesty. We really don't need another america in the pool of america-juniors. EU needs to respect the customs of other countries.

Ah another one down the rabbit hole of delusion, no the EU does not need to respect customs which are repressive just because they belong to “other countries”

If westernization is so horrific to certain cultures I really don't understand why these cultures massively migrate to Europe. ;)

Since when was equality classed as Islamophobia? The eu is asking for nothing more than the right to choose.

The world has changed considerably in half a century.

So your position is that the EU should respect the government of a country forcing women to wear clothing they don't like, is it? Presumably you have to problem with a country that forbids women to drive a car, either.

We should all respect a country's right to oppress its women, right?

Would you be for all Western countries to ban the veil then? If that was the "custom" of those countries?

...I mean, if customs are the gold standard.

Now, everybody says it's just a small minority of Muslims who are radical. But we can obviously see, it appears to be much more like a majority.

...Notice not a single Muslim poster has said that Iranian woman should be able to choose for themselves whether to veil or not.

Suppression is paramount in all of Islam. Now we can all know this, and we don't need to lie to ourselves to pretend it isn't so.

Since when is preventing a wrong "westernizing" ? I guess the North was "westernizing" the South during our Civil War. At times there are right actions that are correct independent of culture. For a country to try to tell their women what to wear is as wrong as it telling its men what they ought to wear. Or perhaps in your case, what you ought to shave. Personally I will support your right to grow as epic of a beard as you want.

Actually, I think you need to be careful with this line of thinking. Firstly, my understanding is that islam does not in fact prescribe any particular dress code, so long as people dress modestly. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, modern islam is cursed with something called "political islam". This is a political movement, started in Egypt and Pakistan within the last half century, that has become very influential and enrolled a lot of muslim people, whether they like it or not, by taking over the mosques and moving the goalposts of what is taught and expected, in a radical direction. The comments you make have truth in them as regards modern political islam but, according to my understanding, are not really applicable to islam per se.

There is a very readable first hand account of all this called "The Islamist", by a man who grew up in London and experienced this change - a perversion really - of what the religion used to be, before the hotheads got hold of it and distorted it.

I'd still like to see a Muslim poster adamantly opposed to Irans compulsory veiling law. I'll stand by and give the others time to come forward if they so choose.

That for sure is a fact, that it's not minority

And I understand after many centuries brainwashed "man on top", I don't expect them to give this up anytime soon

But I won't understand if the West would give them 1 finger, because they will take your whole hand (men won't give up all their privileges easily after so many centuries)

You may have a long wait. Ask yourself what sort of muslims are likely to visit a forum like this one.
But I suppose I may be pleasantly surprised.

In the West feminism was needed to give women their long overdue respect. So this is needed in Middle East too. They are just a (few) centuries behind.

But it will happen, because Truth must prevail
