In perusing the religious debates forum, it appears that some members wear their emotions on their sleeves, so to speak. Religious debates on RF range from passionate to downright hostile.

Do you feel you can approach a religious debate with equanimity?

Is there value in doing so?

    Why or why not?

I think I've become better at this over the years, especially through my different religious affiliations. I would like to hope I can learn stuff from other people here rather than just 'debate to win'. How often I achieve this, I don't know.

    At first.

But honestly, other's extreme emotions burn me out quickly. So, I can approach said debate in an even temperament, but once the poo flinging begins, I feel drained and generally see my way to the door.

There is definite value in being able to approach something with an even mind. That is most often the only way people listen to each other. Once the volume starts rising, figuratively speaking, people focus more on being heard and less on hearing, in my experience.

A shouting match is a waste of time.

I do pretty well at religious debates. Politics? As they say, that's a "work in progress" because I can go from calm to boiling in milliseconds.

I find this interesting. What would you consider the biggest difference to be in how you approach topics in the two venues?

Are you more passionate about political issues than religious ones, or are you just feel that people have less influence on society with religious views than political views?

Approaching discussions/debates with equanimity is essential. Otherwise the discussion too easily generates more heat than light and its difficult to communicate and learn. While its the ideal I aspire too, its easy to fall short, sometimes badly.

everyone wants to be loved but not everyone is loving. when you question someone's belief system, their foundation and you show them that something they rely on isn't backing it up, you're going to see hostility and emotional upset. that world that they have fantasized about, imagined, has gotten re-arranged. sometimes people don't want the truth. its a bit scary feeling like you aren't the one in control.

santa clause isn't a person who lives at the north pole. I was miffed. someone had some explaining to do. so what is more important

socializing with someone and learning something new

    or

reinforcing someones idea of self-perpetuating fantasy

its what we don't know that kills us. it isn't what we believe.

In areas of religion and spirituality I don't see an either/or but rather many different approaches. Even those who think I'm going in the exact wrong path are sincere in their beliefs.

In the political realm, I can find areas of agreement with almost any person/group. But when it comes to unquestioning allegiance to someone, unwillingness to call out lust for power or unquestioning acceptance of lying/gaslighting I get triggered.

I don't really feel like it's that hostile , at its worst.. if you've ever been on early forums with no rules, I can remember just how viscous people could get though . People will just let the hounds loose if you let em

That requires actually approaching it and speaking about it, doesn't it?
Have you seen the agnostic DIR?:p

I can. I’m pretty chill about religion.
Politics seems more emotionally charged. Well American politics at least

By equanimity are you referring to a dispassionate analysis of empirical facts?

Discussion of serious topics, where issues of fact are in dispute, must scrupulously avoid emotional contamination. Serious disputants must switch to Spock mode, with no right-brain input.

You mean sanely, without rancor? It is very difficult with the adherents of Christianirty and Islam and the younger sibling, the Bahais. RF is basically dominated by Christians and the Abrahmic religions have atheists as adversaries when they are not fighting among each other. The positions are intractable, and I think that is perhaps what we come here for, fight till the last breath. :D

The fight is an illusion. Once we close the screen, we take a nap, feed the pets, go to work, and yap at the t.v.

It does give insight of extreme religious and cultural biases people have they wouldn't say in person.

I was already breathless when I got here.

I was hoping for sarcastic jokes and cat pictures. I haven't been disappointed.

Strictly religious like discussing theology, scriptures, insights, I'm actually very calm to tell you honestly. Political religious topics such as stereotypes about priests and the church, lgbtq issues, life/death, and premeditated negative responses etc would get me more round up.

I don't think on an online platform it's truly possible to be calm without needing to change the topic or avoid the conversation. I assume it's more discerning your triggers.

Its the triggers that's the issue. Click-baits

Me getting upset about poo flinging monsters in RF  Nope nope nopti-nope
But a few times i come a cross a poop of a debate person  And me wearing my emotions on my sleeves  ummm nope.... just want to rip someones heart out, stomp on it and ripp it to peases

Or maybe this guy actually do care about what others say :( and get hurt when someone stepping on my belief , but i do wish to have a calm civilized discussion without a lot of craptiduda and poop flinging....

But honestly: it has helped to be honest about how I felt and a lot of it if not all (so far) has calmed down and i feel so much more happy in RF now :)
