I am a retired history lecturer and would be happy to help with the above. (Especially post-Roman to end of WWII)

All right! :) I've always had a bit of an interest in the English presence in the New World. What got the English interested in colonialism? I guess what I'm asking is, why the interest in moving beyond the known world and forming an empire? This seems to have some implications for modern space colonization. People like Newt Gingrich are in favor of moon colonies and Mars colonies, and I'm curious about what motivated people to leave behind their old lives and seek out opportunity in the unknown.
