You probably already know all of this, but just in case....

Here's the scene at the start of the day: According to almost all of the experts, 39 or so states are already decided. That is, the public opinion polls reveal that either Obama or Romney has the state in the can. That leaves just 11 states or so that are genuinely contested. But at least some of those states must be won to win the election.

The contested states are (according to Real Clear Politics): Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, Colorado, and Nevada. (Some people count one or two fewer states than 11 in the undecided category.)

In this election, the single most important undecided state is Ohio. Whoever wins that state, is mostly likely to win the election.

Colorado, my state, starts the day leaning slightly towards Romney.

About a third of the electorate voted before election day. The turn out in early voting favored Obama, but not by the same margins as four years ago, when early voting favored Obama by seven points over John McCain.

A third of the electorate as in 33% of eligible voters?

    What's the normal turnout overall?

I think the source for that was MSNBC, and they didn't specify precisely what they were referring to.

    Thanks.

BTW: NPR was reporting that in Dixville Notch, there's a tie: 5 votes for Obama, 5 for Romney (for 100% voter turnout at their polling station with 10 voters).

That's probally going to end up being misleading; they can't count early gotes until election day, so they have to base it on party affiliation and exit polls.

Neither of which can be considered extremely accurate.

The Today Show offered the "nightmare scenario" where each candidate could possibly be in a dead electoral tie at 269 votes each. Can you imagine what the country would be like if that were to happen? :run:

    I voted! :D

What? I thought it was important and news worthy. :p

I will note that as a moderate who has, (up until today), always voted republican or libertarian, it was weird to vote for a Democrat.

What makes you assume that? The Polls there open at 12:01AM on election day. FYI it is already reported that those results are correct.

They're a swing state. If you had got the people around you to be more wishy-washy, you could've been a swing state, too. :D
