I haven't visited recently, but there is a museum here that once had quite a number of Egyptian artifacts. These are amazing to see in person. So much attention was paid to the subjective experience of life, even to the point of inventing the first synthetic pigment: "Egyptian Blue".
Modern science provides "ultramarine" pigment, which is chemically similar to Lapis. But in the ancient world, "blue" was pretty hard to come by. The Egyptians were up to the challenge and made a cheaper version so more artisans could use it. I believe they may have placed the experience of the color itself over the status associated with the expense of genuine Lapis.

The term for it in the Egyptian language is hsbd-iryt, which means artificial lapis lazuli (hsbd).
