Domestic help

It started slowly, with her husband distancing her from her friends and family and confining her to the house. Then the yelling and insults began. And then, ultimately, the shoving, hitting, and kicking.

When "Yael" turned to neighborhood rabbis for help, her husband told them their marital problems were merely ones of communication. After one meeting in which she hinted that she was being abused, her husband beat her so badly that she resolved to keep quiet. It was only after the attacks became a near daily occurrence, and took place while she was holding their two young children, or even at the hospital where one child was receiving medical treatment, that she decided to get out. After a three-day weekend of repeated beatings, she ran to a neighbor's house to phone a friend for help since her husband had taken her own phone away. The police ended up briefly arresting her husband, and those who knew what had happened told her she had to leave.
