The myth of God owes its origin to the Egyptian myths

101 Myths of the Bible was written in 1943 and republished by Sourcebooks about 2000.The author, Gary Greenberg, is Presidnt of the Biblical Archaeology Society of New York.

Not to denigrate the accomplishments of the ancient Egyptians, but they didn't invent God.

This discussion has not specified Christianity. The Bible has little relevance, if any.

As long as anyone capitalizes god to God, a Christian god is specified

In some circles yes... God and god are distinct.
For the purposes of this thread I'm not sure it's the intention.

Sometimes, yes, but it's not a blanket rule like Pah's claiming.

Wow, what cretinous drivel. Christianity isn't the only religion with a monotheistic deity. So no. No, it's not.

Hell, it doesn't even specify monotheism.

Since the thread's been resurrected, I thought I'd answer this in more detail.

While I agree that there's nothing supernatural about them (hardly shocking, as I do not believe in the supernatural), one of the serious contenders is indeed revelation. Theophany happens, and it probably played a major role in the development of religion and the concept of God.

As I said, I do not believe that theophany has a supernatural source, simply because I do not believe in the supernatural. However, I acknowledge the possibility.

Well, I don't think it's complete BS. The vast majority of the time, in English, when someone capitalizes "God", it refers to Christianity. Other religions and philosophies have taken the name to refer to different ideas.

Now, as far as how it relates to this thread, I couldn't say. I haven't read enough of the thread to know, but I gather that a capitalized "God" in this thread would probably refer to a lot more than just Christianity.

Know any other gods named God? I would hazard a guess that it began in the King James Version.

But back to "The myth of God owes its origin to the Egyptian myths"

Is that quote, posted above, in contention?

Well, considering that we were discussing the evolution of the concept of God, I think it was rather obvious.

The Christian God isn't named God, either. That's just cultural baggage. Anyway, had you been paying the slightest bit of attention, it would have been beyond obvious that I wasn't discussing Christianity.

The Christian God? I'd say it owes a good deal more to Judaism.

Regardless, it's off-topic. Try actually reviewing the thread, or at least the last few pages.

It shows, by example, how all gods were created.

At the risk of being further off topic, There is no other monotheistic creation named God. The god of Judiasm and Islam are hardly the same god each having different behaviors abd different purposes.

I understand, and I assume it was that obvious. Like I said, I didn't read the rest of the thread. I just wanted to clarify.

I find it hard to believe that you've been around here for 4 years, and still don't understand the basics like this.
