Do you trust the government of your country

We Never Know

No Slack
Being there are several countries represented here on RF, how many of you trust your government when relating to being upfront with truths, your well being, etc.

I live in the US. I trust the government. At least, I trust the government to consistently do whatever helps expand, perpetuate, and monopolize its power.

I used to not trust that the government was being upfront with me, but over the past 7-8 years it seems that government officials have become increasingly more open about their actual intentions and are now focusing more on rewriting popular morality to justify them. It seems to be working. Good for them, I guess.

The government is not really in power in the US, anyway. Even they have to purchase their supplies from marked-up industries and outsource their labor to the private sector. Lobbying, campaign funding, internal party politics, and tricks like Gerrymandering mean that our representatives tend to be the ones that curry the most corporate favor, too.

I think it's interesting that so many people focus on celebrities like Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates as the "wealthiest" people in the world. There are investors with international wealth and power that far surpass them. It's not the White House that governs America. It's Wall Street. And I don't trust them at all.

Not entirely. This is why I feel I have to stay on my toes, always be alert, participate and be active politically. Somebody has got to hold these dufuses accountable.

I trust the current U.K. government to be the same self serving, dishonest, blatantly corrupt bunch of liars, kleptocrats and fools they have shown themselves to be for years now. I also trust they’ll be out on their ears at the next general election, which can’t come soon enough.

The question is, do I trust the next government to put right the damage these criminal idiots have done to our country and it’s reputation? Jury’s out, for now.

Ditto. From across the pond.

There are élites behind the scenes who maneuver the most important European governments which are all democratically elected.
So the democratically elected parliamentarians or the executive power are in good faith until the evidence of the contrary is provided.
So, if we are speaking of truths...well...I guess they are mostly covered up, and hence mistrust is natural :)

Truths are exposed sooner or later.
Finally they confessed. After 43 years, they said that the Ustica plane crash in 1980, was due to a NATO missile supposed to hit Gaddafi's plane, but actually hit an Italian commercial plane, causing its destruction and the death of 81 people.

And people ask me: why do you distrust the NATO, since your country is in the NATO?

;)

A few years, I walked into my office and found one of my team using the phone. He was a good man, so I gave him some privacy. A little later he apologised, but he had to make a call urgently. He was from a small Caribbean nation. His sister, a teacher, had recently come to London on a visit. He had just found out that she was now considering coming here to live and work. He was nearly in tears when he said that the thought of his wonderful niece and nephew growing up to be like the schoolkids he sees near his home was breaking his heart, so he had to beg her not to come.

I have seen first hand the decimation of our health service and armed forces. When I walk the streets where I grew up, I regularly see homeless and mentally ill people. I see junkies and prostitutes, something unthinkable in my younger day.

Trust, the only thing about any of the more recent British governments, certainly since Thatcher and Blair, that I trust in, is their ability to earn my total contempt.

It depends. When it comes to things like weather reports and traffic conditions, I have no compelling reason to not trust government when it comes to that kind of information (allowing for some margin of error). It doesn't matter what kind of political system it is, there will always be some things the government will mostly tell the truth about.

If the government says a lower-class individual is guilty of a crime, I would say there's a 1 in 3 chance they're either lying or mistaken.

If the government says an upper-class individual is innocent of a crime, I would say there's an 80% chance they're lying.

If the government says there's a country which is a threat to U.S. interests, I would say there's a 95% to 98% chance they're lying (or mistaken, since most of them can't even be expected to be able to point out their own state on a map).

If the government hires an actor to break an egg, starts frying it, and says "This is your brain on drugs," I would say there's a 100% chance they're lying.

If the government says they don't have enough money to fix the roads, I would say there's a 150% chance they're lying.

If they can, it won't be overnight. There's so much to fix, it will be difficult to prioritise.

Sad but true.
