Let's assume that you were told that you had to choose two other people to join you for the rest of your life lets say you were shot off the planet to start a new colony somewhere in space. You would never return to Earth and there would be no communication again with those left behind, for whatever technical reason. And every decision made you would vote on.

The only thing you know is that everyone you have to choose from, is equally qualified but you have never met or spoken to any of them. You simply have to choose two people to come along with you, under the following rules.

    1. You can choose two people that share your religious beliefs, like a Muslim could choose two other muslims, atheists two other atheists etc.

    2. Choose two people sharing the same religion (you didn't know which, it would just be random), but it would be different from yours or two atheists etc.

    3. Wouldn't care about it.

So when it comes down to it, would you choose option 1, 2 or 3?

Well, that's quite a feat you're talking about. You're talking about seeding a planet and building a society.

The immediate issue that comes to mind is overall worldview. Do you believe that humans (at least) have an immortal soul, dignity and there's an overall purpose and goal of existence? Or do you believe in nothing, we are just meat robots and there's no point to anything?

It's not really about a specific religion or politics or anything like that. It's about being able to agree, fundamentally, on the basics of things.

Well I mean if you’re going to be stuck with them forever, perhaps an interview process? You can share all the beliefs you like, but if you have no real chemistry with the person or your personalities clash, it would be rather a long eternity, if you get me?

I occasionally find the lack of common interests refreshing. I get along with nearly everyone.

Yeah. Sometimes it’s the differences that make conversation more interesting

I would choose option number one, without a doubt.

However... I do not treat all people equal, because all people are not equal.

We're all people and that makes us 99.99% or greater the same.

3, definitely. People who care about religion, aside from the philosophical entertainment, tend to be or become fanatics. And as there is no such thing as two people sharing a religion, conflict is pre-programed.

I'd go for the atheists; because they are more likely to be scientists or thinkers and therefore most useful when building a new society.

Well its you, yourself, with whatever opinion/vision you might have and you have to choose two others to join you. Its not about whether I think humans are robots or not, or whether its about more than this and that. Its only about you choosing who will join you.

Well there is no time for an interview, you have to go at once :)

The only thing you know is what is under the conditions, so who would you choose?

That you wouldn't care who joined you on the trip, it could be an atheist and a mormon or whatever. But you would still have to vote on things. So the question is whether the religious background of those joining you would matter to you. Do you think it would be better to have like minded people in terms of religion or not, or would you see everyone as equal, so it wouldn't matter, if it was you and two muslims or JWs for instance.
