Do astronauts reach heaven when they reach space? If not where do the people go when they allegedly rise to heaven?

Is that just a type of mythology based on a complete misunderstanding of "the heavens"?

Do you believe people can rise into heaven in bodily form?

'Heavens' means the sky. So when Jesus rose up, it was into the sky, I don't think people know where He went.

Considering that many scholars aren't even sure which deity/deities are being referred to, who is/isn't a deity etc., at least in secular and some religious scholarship that question imo would be far down on the list of things to figure out.

Yup, they do. Of course, to get to the third heaven they'll need a submersible rocket of some kind.

It's been my understanding - even during my few years of Catholic upbringing - that heaven is not a this-worldly place, it's an otherworldly place. Or if you want to put it in sci-fi terms, think of it as another dimension or plane of existence.

So, you're saying that Genesis 1: 7-8 is wrong? That it doesn't reside between two water boundries?

"In summary, here is the structure of the physical world as it now exists from the face of the Earth upwards:

    • The lower sea of physical waters (our seas and oceans)
    • The first heaven (the atmosphere)
    • The second heaven (outer space)
    • The sea above outer space and below the third heaven (a sea of separation)
    • And above it all, there is the Third Heaven."

It is almost as if they thought they could build a big tower and shoot an arrow into the sky and make sky god angry.

I have always wondered, though, if it is not even in this dimension or plane of existence, then why is mentioned as being "above" or "in the sky?" In most cultures, heaven is generally seen as "up," (Even though there is no actual "up" for a round Earth.)

That is kinda what I would figure too but are christians supposed to be taking the jesus resurrection literally? I don't think so but others seem more adamant. It doesn't seem to make sense taken literally.

This probably has origins of how smoke rises.

Smoke and fire spirits are the oldest, and these people had no clue why smoke rised.

The questions your asking all have answers, but when and what time period are you addressing, makes all the difference.

Ancient people had no concept of what space is, so throw that all out as your imagination.

Pre existing beliefs had some ties to astrology, but only in the context of ancients imagination of what existed above them.

Seems to me that a claim that someone rose to "heaven" would be a flat out lie. Of course they would of thought that it is sound cause where else are the heavens supposed to be.

The heavens can be the sky above us, or it can be the realm where God resides.

Astronaughts can only remain in the physical heavens... they can't enter the spiritual realm no matter how high they go because that realm is not a physical place. Its metaphysical and therefore a physical person would never get into it... the bible actually says flesh cannot enter the heavens where God resides.

Don't forget, Jesus will come back on a cloud from heaven, so everyone can see him...

It's a very literal understanding. They put the holy place in a part of our world that they thought man would never be able to venture into... whoops.

Also, not to mention he "ascended" not "teleported into another dimension."

I know about the spiritual body thing but wasn't Jesus in physical form? Thats what Thomas was so doubtful about.

He rose into the Heavens. That's where it ends. That's all of his earthly odyssey. He physically moves on to other planets full of life, repeating the same for each across the universe. Right now he is probably somewhere in our galaxy still, depending on his speed. He could also be still within our solar system as well if he is keeping a constant, slow speed as described when leaving earth. Far beyond our voyagers and such.

That would explain why it is taking him so long to return, and why he couldn't just do it immediately instead of waiting. Because it must be done for all planets in the universe. Not everyone has gotten their salvation yet, and so nobody can have their revelation yet.

Speaking of dimensions, it's very possible that teleported and ascended can be synonymous. Third dimensionally it appears he teleported, but he ascended fourth dimensionally. If an object is moving on a third dimensional scale, it would appear to "teleport" on the 2nd dimension.
